BMW Global Recall: 575,000 Cars Affected by Starter Motor Defect (Feb 2026)

BMW has issued a global recall affecting approximately 575,000 vehicles produced between July 2020 and July 2022, due to a critical starter motor issue.

What’s the Problem?

The defect lies in the magnetic switch (solenoid) of the starter motor. Repeated engine starts cause excessive wear, leading to:
  • Difficulty starting the vehicle or failure to start
  • Short circuit risk → localized overheating → potential fire hazard while the engine is running or in motion

Affected Models (Global)

  • 2 Series Coupe (G42)
  • 3 Series (G20, G21, G28)
  • 4 Series (G22, G23, G26)
  • 5 Series (G30, G31)
  • 6 Series GT (G32)
  • 7 Series (G11, G12)
  • X3, X4, X5, X6 (G01, G02, G05, G06)
  • Z4 (G29) → Toyota GR Supra (mechanically identical) is also under scrutiny

Malaysia Update

BMW Group Malaysia is still verifying the exact number of local units affected.
  • Authorized dealers will contact affected owners directly.
  • The company assures vehicles remain safe during the investigation.

Fix & Cost

  • Free full starter motor replacement for all affected vehicles.
  • 12V battery may also be replaced if necessary.

Regional Numbers

  • Germany: 28,582 units
  • USA: 87,394 units
This is BMW’s second major starter-related recall in six months (following a 330,000-unit recall in September 2025).
