BYD's global expansion continues at a remarkable pace. According to the latest reports, the Chinese giant has just achieved a major milestone in Australia with the delivery of its 100,000th New Energy Vehicle (NEV).
Notably, BYD just officially entered the Australian market in November 2022. This means the brand took just three and a half years to go from zero to 100,000 units in a market known for its demanding quality standards and tough competition — a powerful demonstration of its rapid growth momentum.

Interestingly, the honour of being the 100,000th vehicle went to BYD's first-ever super hybrid pickup — the BYD Shark 6. Since deliveries began in early 2025, the Shark 6 has quickly gained popularity within Australia's renowned "Ute Culture", thanks to its strong off-road capabilities combined with passenger-car levels of comfort and refinement.

Built on BYD's DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) platform, the Shark 6 delivers performance figures that can stand up against established Malaysian pickup favourites like the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.
Powertrain: Plug-in hybrid system combining a 1.5T high-efficiency engine with dual electric motors.
Performance: Total combined output of 430 hp, with a 0–100 km/h sprint time of just 5.7 seconds.
Towing Capacity: Maximum braked towing capacity of 2,500 kg.
Range: Total NEDC range of 840 km, including up to 100 km of pure electric range — ideal for daily commuting.
Drive Modes: Three professional off-road modes — Sand, Mud, and Snow.

With BYD's strong performance in Australia, Malaysian enthusiasts are naturally asking: when will the Shark 6 finally reach our shores?
Currently represented by Sime Darby Motors in Malaysia, BYD has already established itself as one of the leading non-national EV brands locally. While the Shark 6 has not yet been officially confirmed for Malaysia, recent easing of government policies on NEV pickups and BYD's ongoing CKD plans strongly suggest that its arrival is only a matter of time.
As Australia celebrates its 100,000-unit milestone, Malaysia is steadily approaching its own 30,000-unit mark. If the Shark 6 is launched at a competitive price, it could trigger a significant shake-up in the local pickup segment.
