Six years after the Proton X50 made its Malaysian debut, Proton is celebrating the SUV's anniversary with a new Sport Edition (SE). Bookings are now open nationwide, with the X50 having sold more than 177,000 units since its launch.
If the blacked-out X50 shown at KLIMS in June caught your eye, this is the production version. And unlike the previous Sport Edition, the new X50 SE is based on the range-topping Flagship variant, a decision Proton says was made in response to customer feedback.

The changes are mostly cosmetic, with 15 exclusive exterior and interior upgrades. Here's what you get.
The new X50 SE comes in Quartz Black, with red pinstriping providing some contrast against the otherwise all-black exterior.

Among the changes are a black front upper garnish, black trim around the front and rear side air intakes, and a bodykit covering the front, sides and rear. Sport Edition badges distinguish it from the regular X50.

It also rides on 18-inch alloy wheels finished in a mix of matte and gloss black.

The large rear spoiler is back, featuring a carbon-fibre-look finish and a red S badge. Below it sits a rear diffuser with matching red accents.
Proton says the Sport Edition accessories have been put through more than 13,700 hours of testing, including corrosion, UV and durability tests, to check how well they hold up in Malaysia's tropical climate.
The X50 SE keeps the Flagship's 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen and 8.88-inch digital instrument display, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The "Hi Proton" voice assistant supports commands in both Malay and English.

Inside, the Flagship's red-and-black dashboard makes way for an all-black finish. Red stitching on the seats and steering wheel adds a bit of colour without changing the overall theme.

There are also SE logos on the front seats, special floor mats with red piping and Sport Edition door sill plates. The panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate and 72-colour ambient lighting from the Flagship are all included.

One useful addition is a set of TPE floor mats fitted beneath the regular mats. They're waterproof, lightweight and quick to dry, making them handy during Malaysia's rainy season.
Mechanically, the X50 SE is unchanged from the Flagship. It uses a 1.5-litre i-GT turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 181 PS and 290 Nm, paired with a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission.
Proton claims a 0–100 km/h time of 7.6 seconds and fuel consumption of 6.1 litres per 100km.

The equipment list includes 15 advanced driver assistance features, such as Auto Park Assist, adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking. There's also a 360-degree HD camera system with a 180-degree transparent chassis view.
The all-new Proton X50 Sport Edition can now be booked at authorised Proton showrooms across Malaysia.
Pricing has not been announced, and Proton has yet to say whether the new SE will be a limited-production model. The previous Sport Edition was limited to 1,000 units.
For buyers who want the X50 Flagship's equipment with a factory-fitted black bodykit and a darker interior, the Sport Edition brings both together. We'll have to wait for the official price to see how it compares with the regular Flagship.
