The new smart #2 has made its world debut at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, bringing the brand's signature two-seater city car back in fully electric form.
The launch also marks a return to Paris for smart. In 1996, the brand displayed its original two-seater concept as an art installation at the Louvre Pyramid. Thirty years later, the production smart #2 has made its debut in the same city.

The new smart #2 was designed by Mercedes-Benz's global design team, which has retained much of the character of the original smart city car.
Its rounded bodywork and sculpted surfaces give it a friendly appearance, while the familiar wheels-at-the-corners layout helps make the most of its compact footprint.
The lighting design takes inspiration from the smart logo, and the signature floating roof has been updated for the new model. Together, these details give the #2 a recognisable smart look without simply copying the original.

Built on the Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), the smart #2 retains the small dimensions that made its predecessors so well suited to city driving. It also uses conventional mechanical door handles.
The car measures 2,751 mm long, 1,669 mm wide and 1,555 mm tall, with a 1,875 mm wheelbase. Certain versions are slightly longer at 2,764 mm.
All variants use narrower front tyres and wider rear tyres, a setup intended to provide lighter steering, better grip and improved stability.
Despite its size, smart claims a cabin space utilisation rate of 78%. The floor sits 25 mm lower than in the previous fortwo, while vertical space utilisation reaches 64%. Headroom measures 1,000 mm.

The smart #2 offers up to seven airbags, including front and side airbags, curtain airbags on both sides and a front far-side airbag.
It also comes with up to 16 advanced safety and driver assistance features, including:
Other functions cover city driving assistance, Emergency Braking, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Door Opening Warning, helping drivers deal with common hazards in urban traffic.

Inside, the smart #2 features a bench-style front seat and a wraparound dashboard with S-shaped, ripple-like surfaces. The layout makes use of the limited cabin space, with contrasting colours and materials adding some character.

The ripple design continues across the cabin trim, but one of the more practical features is found at the rear.
The split tailgate has an upper glass section that can be opened separately, making it easier to reach smaller items when the car is parked close to a wall or another vehicle.
The lower section folds down to form a loading platform. It can also be used as a temporary seat when parked outdoors, with a maximum load capacity of 120 kg.

The smart #2 uses an integrated 11-in-1 electric drive system producing 60 kW.
Its minimum turning radius is just 3.35 metres, making tight turns and parking manoeuvres easier in crowded urban areas.
Power comes from a 35.8 kWh CATL lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, with a claimed range of up to 410 km under the CLTC test cycle. That should provide plenty of range for daily commuting, although real-world figures will depend on driving conditions.
Fast charging from 10% to 80% takes a claimed 20 minutes.
The smart #2 also supports vehicle-to-load (V2L), allowing the battery to power compatible electrical appliances and devices when needed.

Alongside the regular smart #2, the company has introduced a limited-run Gold Special Edition, bringing the concept's "Function becomes Fashion" theme to the production model.
Production is limited to 999 units for Europe and another 999 for China. In China, the special edition is priced at RMB 112,999 (approximately RM 69k).
The standard smart #2 Premium is expected to go on sale in early November, when further specifications and pricing details are due to be announced.
