Chery Malaysia announces Omoda 5 recall following rear axle incident – owners can check affected vehicles online

Chery Malaysia has officially announced a recall campaign for the Chery Omoda 5 following the recent rear axle detachment incident in Johor Bahru, with affected owners being offered free inspections and component replacements where necessary.

In a statement issued on October 11, 2026, the company confirmed that the campaign covers Omoda 5 C and H variants, adding that it has been working closely with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) since the incident was first reported.

The announcement comes after JPJ ordered the temporary suspension of the Omoda 5's relevant Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) certification, effectively halting new registrations of potentially affected vehicles until technical investigations and corrective measures are completed.

The latest case involved a black Chery Omoda 5 whose rear axle assembly reportedly detached in Johor Bahru, raising renewed concerns about the model's safety.

In a separate customer FAQ accompanying its announcement, Chery Malaysia said it had identified a potential issue involving a rear axle component manufactured in 2023 and supplied to the company.

However, Chery has not explicitly confirmed that this component was the definitive cause of the latest incident. The company describes the recall as a precautionary measure involving potentially affected vehicles.

How to check whether your Omoda 5 is affected

Chery Malaysia has established an online VIN verification system allowing owners to determine whether their vehicles are included in the recall.

Owners can visit the official Chery Product Update portal and enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), also known as the chassis number.

According to Chery, the VIN can be found in several locations on the vehicle, including near the front windscreen and instrument panel, under the bonnet, on the back door or beneath the driver's seat.

Owners whose vehicles are identified as affected should contact their nearest authorised Chery service centre to arrange an inspection.

The company says the recall involves inspecting the relevant rear axle components and replacing them where necessary.

All axle-related inspections and necessary component replacements under the campaign will be carried out free of charge.

Chery has also encouraged Omoda 5 owners whose vehicles are not listed in the recall to arrange an inspection if they have concerns about their vehicles. These additional inspections will be subject to appointment availability at authorised service centres.

What happens if a replacement is required?

According to Chery's customer FAQ, authorised dealers will inspect affected vehicles and advise owners on the necessary corrective measures.

Where a component replacement is required, the service centre will arrange for the appropriate parts and carry out the work according to Chery's product update procedures.

The company has not provided a fixed timeframe for inspections or repairs, explaining that the duration will depend on the vehicle's condition and the work required.

If replacement parts are unavailable during an appointment, the dealer will inform the customer and arrange a follow-up visit once the necessary components become available.

Importantly, second-hand Omoda 5 owners are also eligible for the recall, provided their vehicle's VIN falls within the affected range. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle rather than whether it was purchased new or used.

Chery also clarified that the campaign does not extend to other brands under the Chery Group, as the affected vehicles are identified according to their specific components and technical configurations.

Second rear axle-related incident following 2024 recall

The latest development brings renewed attention to a similar incident involving the Chery Omoda 5 in 2024.

At the time, an Omoda 5 experienced a rear axle-related failure, prompting Chery Malaysia to investigate the incident and subsequently announce a recall involving 600 vehicles.

The earlier investigation identified an issue involving the calibration of welding equipment used by a component supplier, with Chery taking corrective action and arranging inspections and replacements for potentially affected vehicles.

Although both incidents involve the rear axle assembly, it has not been established whether the latest case shares the same underlying cause as the 2024 incident.

The latest recall also follows JPJ's announcement that it would conduct a technical audit of Chery's production and assembly processes, including quality control, welding inspections and the relevant component suppliers.

JPJ has stated that the VTA suspension will only be lifted once the necessary corrective and preventive measures have been completed and the department is satisfied that the identified safety risks have been addressed.

For now, Chery Malaysia has not disclosed the total number of Omoda 5 vehicles involved in the latest campaign or provided a completion timeline.

The company has apologised for the inconvenience caused and reiterated its commitment to addressing the matter.

Omoda 5 owners seeking clarification can contact the Chery Careline at 03-9388 0888, visit an authorised service centre or check their vehicle's status through the official VIN verification portal.
