Fuel vs PHEV: Does the Jetour T2 2.0T XWD justify the RM2,000 premium over Jaecoo J7 PHEV?

When you place the price tags of these two side by side, it certainly piques interest. The Jetour T2 2.0T XWD carries a nett vehicle price of RM156,800, while the Jaecoo J7 PHEV retails at RM158,800.

An RM2,000 price gap in today’s automotive market is roughly the cost of decent window tinting or three rounds of full-body detailing. Factoring in the RM2,000 early-bird rebate for the T2, its actual on-the-road price drops to around RM155,669, putting the effective difference at just over RM3,000.

Yet, the real divide between these two goes far beyond pricing. The T2 spans 2,006 mm in width, compared to 1,865 mm for the J7 PHEV. On paper, a 141 mm difference might seem negligible; in the heritage grid of George Town, Penang, or in those notoriously tight parking lots around Petaling Jaya, however, piloting the T2 will have your palms sweating.

In the same situations, the J7 PHEV driver simply steers through without breaking a sweat.

Powertrain

The T2 runs a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. In its finalised local specification, outputs are rated at 242 hp and 375 N·m, with maximum twist coming in as early as 1,750 rpm, channelled via a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission to all four wheels (AWD). The character of this setup is unapologetically punchy and direct.

Accelerating from 100 km/h to 130 km/h for an overtaking manoeuvre along the PLUS Highway, drop a cog via the throttle and the cog swap is crisp, delivering immediate push-to-the-back acceleration. The trade-off comes at the pumps. With combined fuel consumption sitting around 7.9 L/100km, priming its 70-litre fuel tank does take a modest toll on the wallet.

The J7 PHEV takes a radically different route. Pairing a 1.5-litre turbo engine with an electric motor, total system output is officially rated at 342 hp, driving the front wheels through a single-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). Electric-only range is pegged at 88 km under WLTP testing, or roughly 106 km on the NEDC cycle.

This essentially means that if you have a home AC wallbox charger and your daily commute runs between 40 to 50 km, you can complete most runs purely on electric power without touching petrol. Even with a depleted traction battery, fuel consumption remains at roughly 5.99 L/100km—still noticeably thriftier than the T2.

That said, daily life with or without a dedicated home charger makes for two worlds apart. Plug in every night, and the J7 PHEV's running costs drop to mere cents per kilometre.

Without home charging, driving it like a self-charging hybrid still yields respectable efficiency, but that 18.3 kWh battery pack and charging hardware simply turn into deadweight you paid for but seldom harness.

Dimensions

The T2 measures 4,785 mm long, 2,006 mm wide, and 1,870 mm tall, with a 2,800 mm wheelbase, a generous 220 mm ground clearance, and a 700 mm wading depth. Its squarish, rugged silhouette, tailgate-mounted spare tyre, and side-hinged rear door lend it an commanding road presence that the sleek J7 PHEV cannot emulate.

The sheer practicality of that upright boot is unmatched when loading bulky cargo, expanding to nearly 1,500 litres with the rear bench folded flat.

The J7 PHEV adopts far more restrained proportions: 4,500 mm in length, 1,865 mm in width, 1,680 mm in height, on a 2,672 mm wheelbase. Its footprint aligns closely with typical compact urban C-segment SUVs, bringing significantly less driving anxiety through tight multi-storey car parks, cramped housing lanes, and narrow parking spots.

Boot capacity stands at 412 litres, though some materials cite a 500-litre figure. Based on checks, this 500-litre rating stems from the omission of a full spare tyre, replaced instead by a tyre repair kit.

Removing the toolkit frees up an underfloor compartment, but for visible, usable load space above the deck, 412 litres is the true baseline figure.

Warranty Coverage

The T2’s aftersales package is exceptionally solid for an incoming brand: a seven-year or 150,000 km manufacturer warranty, a ten-year or 1,000,000 km powertrain warranty, along with five free service maintenance packages covering parts and labour.

That coverage window comfortably eclipses the typical ownership duration of most vehicle owners.

The J7 PHEV counters with an equally competitive package: a standard seven-year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty, complemented by an eight-year or 160,000 km warranty for the high-voltage battery, drive motor, and motor control unit, backed by a 1-to-1 replacement pledge should battery State of Health (SoH) fall under 70%.

Selected early promotional offers extend the engine and high-voltage battery cover up to ten years or 1,000,000 km, though this remains an introductory campaign rather than an evergreen clause.

Neither contender leaves room for complaint regarding aftersales assurance. The T2 takes the crown with its straightforward, long-term mechanical powertrain peace of mind, whereas the J7 PHEV excels by offering a clear degradation threshold and replacement assurance for its electrified bits.

Ownership Costs

Annual road tax for the 2.0-litre T2 is RM439, whereas the 1.5-litre J7 PHEV incurs just RM120 annually. That RM319 delta translates to roughly RM1,600 saved on road tax over a five-year stretch.

Assuming an average annual mileage of 20,000 km, at 7.9 L/100km on unsubsidised/standard RON 95 petrol pegged at RM2.05/litre, the T2 commands around RM3,239 annually in fuel. Driven in complete hybrid mode without plug-in top-ups, the J7 PHEV at 5.99 L/100km totals approximately RM2,456 per year.

If home charging is used to cover half of that daily mileage in EV mode, actual yearly energy outlays fall substantially further.

On the scheduled maintenance front, the J7 PHEV's periodic servicing up to 100,000 km totals around RM5,575. While comprehensive long-term figures for the T2 have yet to be fully detailed publicly, its initial five free services effectively absorb regular upkeep expenses during the formative years.

Weighing these variables: if your mileage is substantial and home charging is readily available, the J7 PHEV’s low running expenditure will easily claw back its RM2,000 to RM3,000 price premium within three to five years.

Without home charging, that financial edge softens, but lower road tax and thriftier off-charge fuel burn still give the J7 PHEV an edge on running costs. The T2 offers a simpler, predictable ownership dynamic; you absorb the premium of a 2.0-litre turbo engine and AWD in exchange for complete freedom from charging logistics.

Daily Realities

If your regular routes take in broken asphalt, unpaved plantation tracks, flood-prone trunk roads, or outstation overland adventures, the T2’s 220 mm ride height, capable AWD layout, and 700 mm wading depth offer capability that the J7 PHEV simply cannot match.

If road presence tops your checklist, and you appreciate the go-anywhere attitude of a tough, squared-off profile with a tailgate spare, the T2 nails that brief completely. If you often haul large gear or lifestyle equipment, the expansive, flat cargo floor holds vastly superior practical utility.

On the flip side, with access to a home charging wallbox and a daily routine falling well within its electric range, the J7 PHEV's day-to-day commute costs can turn out astonishingly cheap.

If the bulk of your seat time is spent tackling stop-and-go urban traffic, tight junction passes, and cramped mall parking bays, the J7 PHEV’s tidier dimensions will pay daily dividends in ease of use.

If you want swift, effortless performance without paying a heavy fuel penalty, 342 hp combined with 5.99 L/100km battery-depleted fuel economy provides a compelling solution.

An RM2,000 difference is rarely the deciding factor here. Rather, it represents two differing philosophies: the T2 commits its packaging budget to mechanical robustness, all-terrain aptitude, and commanding road presence, while the J7 PHEV directs its value into electrification, urban agility, and running efficiency.

Both execute their briefs convincingly. The choice ultimately rests on which vehicle's natural habitat best mirrors your daily driving lifestyle.
