Jaecoo J7 PHEV vs Proton eMas 7 PHEV: RM29k gap – more power or national choice?

When the Proton eMas 7 PHEV launched in February 2026, many expected it to become Malaysia’s most affordable plug-in hybrid SUV.

However, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV has held its ground firmly at RM158,800, with 57% of J7 buyers opting for the PHEV variant in 2026—more than double the 26% share recorded in 2025.

The eMas 7 PHEV Premium Plus is priced at RM129,800, sitting RM29,000 below the J7 PHEV.

That price gap is enough to cover three years’ worth of petrol, but the J7 PHEV does pack serious kit: a total system output of 342 hp, an 18.3 kWh battery, 88 km of pure electric range, and 40 kW DC fast charging. The real question is: does the tech justify the RM29,000 premium?

The J7 PHEV runs Chery's 5th-generation 1.5T turbocharged petrol engine (141 hp / 215 Nm), paired with a front-mounted electric motor (201 hp / 310 Nm) for a total system output of 342 hp and 525 Nm.

It completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 8.5 seconds, offers an 88 km pure electric range (WLTP), and claims an overall range of up to 1,200 km.

The J7 PHEV’s 88 km is adequate for daily urban driving, but if your daily commute exceeds 70 km, the petrol engine will kick in far more frequently.

When it comes to maintenance, the eMas 7 PHEV calls for servicing once a year or every 15,000 km—substantially more forgiving than most pure ICE vehicles.

Official servicing intervals and costs for the J7 PHEV remain unconfirmed, though managing a complex turbo-hybrid powertrain inevitably adds to routine servicing scope.

The eMas 7 PHEV measures 4,740 mm long, 1,940 mm wide, with a 2,755 mm wheelbase and 528 litres of boot capacity. In contrast, the J7 PHEV stands at 4,500 mm long, 1,865 mm wide, with a 2,672 mm wheelbase and 500 litres of cargo space.

That gives the Proton a 240 mm lead in length, an extra 83 mm in wheelbase, and 28 litres more luggage volume.

In real-world use, a 28-litre boot difference is negligible—both will comfortably swallow a 28-inch check-in bag alongside two cabin trolleys. The real differentiator is rear passenger accommodation.

The eMas 7 PHEV’s 2,755 mm wheelbase places it among the roomiest in its segment, offering ample rear legroom even for 180 cm occupants.

While the J7 PHEV’s 2,672 mm wheelbase is perfectly decent for daily duties, the eMas 7 PHEV’s generous rear cabin space is something you will appreciate every single day if you regularly carry passengers.

Against its original RM158,800 sticker price, this translates to a 19% to 20% depreciation in its first year—well within the normal range for Chinese PHEV SUVs.

The eMas 7 PHEV only hit showrooms in February 2026, meaning used car market data is virtually non-existent. While Proton vehicles have established resale trends in Malaysia, the eMas 7 is the national carmaker's first-ever PHEV, meaning its long-term value retention will take time to establish.
