Lepas L4 EV previewed in Malaysia – Entry-level EV SUV that offers a C-segment wheelbase

Lepas is officiating here sooner than later – its official website has been up and running since June, and spyshots of the entry-level Lepas L4 surfaced in late-July.

Now, the Chery sub-brand recently previewed the Lepas L4 EV at Sunway Pyramid, hinting at its entry-level EV’s imminent arrival here.

While Lepas Malaysia has remained tight lipped surrounding the L4 EV’s specifications, we can take a look at its Indonesian cousin, which made its debut there late last month.

A closer look at the Lepas L4 EV

Starting with the dimensions, the Indo-spec Lepas L4 EV measures 4,420 mm long, 1,817 mm wide, 1,635 mm tall, with a 2,700 mm wheelbase.

For context, that would place the Lepas L4 EV longer than the Jaecoo J5 EV, but shorter the the J7. The L5 EV’s 2,700 mm-long wheelbase is even longer than the J7’s 2,672 mm wheelbase, mind you.

To call it a B-segment SUV would be a stretch, as the model overlaps both B- and C-segment dimensions. B+ or C- segment, that’s up to you. That said, unlike a lot of B-segment SUVs, the Lepas L4 EV adopts a set of rear multi-link suspension. Most B-segment SUVs adopt a mechanically simpler and cost effective set of torsion beam rear suspension instead.

Boot space is rated at 508 litres. Fold the rear seats down and boot space can be expanded to 1,334 litres.

Then there’s the powertrain.

The Indonesia-spec car gets a front-mounted electric motor that does 160 kW (218 PS) and 275 Nm, juiced by a 67-kWh battery pack. Like the Jaecoo J5 EV, the Lepas L4 EV also gets a frunk. Coincidentally, both frunks are rated at 35 litres.

The claimed range of the Lepas L4 EV is up to 600 km, under the lenient CLTC test cycle. 

According to Lepas Indonesia, the battery pack accepts up to 130 kW of DC fast charging, taking 20 minutes from 30% to 80% state-of-charge (SoC).

Standard equipment of the Indo-spec car includes a 6-way power-adjustable driver seat, 4-way manual-adjustable front passenger seat, 8.0-inch digital driver display, 13.2-inch infotainment display, synthetic leather upholstery on the seats and steering wheel, 50-watt wireless charging pad, as well as a 6-speaker sound system.

Additionally, the ID-spec car also gets heated rear-view mirrors, 18-inch alloy wheels, power tailgate, and a sunroof.

In terms of safety kit, the Lepas L4 EV gets 6 airbags, 540-degree camera, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), as well as 18 ADAS features.

For Indonesians, the Lepas L4 EV is priced at IDR 339,000,000 (~RM 78k). That’s right smack between the Toyota Raize (IDR 292 million onwards) and Toyota Yaris Cross (IDR 359.7 million onwards).
