New Mitsubishi Pajero to launch in Japan in December: 5,500 pre-orders blow past annual target

The new-generation Mitsubishi Pajero will go on sale in Japan on 17 December, with demand already exceeding expectations. Since bookings opened on 1 October, Mitsubishi has received more than 5,500 orders in just one month – surpassing the sales target it had set for the entire year.

Four variants will be offered in Japan: the range-topping Super Exceed and Exceed, which focus on comfort and premium appointments, alongside the GSR and GLS, which place greater emphasis on rugged styling and driving enjoyment.

Key Highlights

Classic Pajero styling meets modern design

The new Pajero retains the model's familiar boxy proportions and straight-edged styling, while bringing a more contemporary look. Its design also pays homage to the original Pajero, including the distinctive roll-bar-inspired detail around the C-pillar.

2.4-litre turbo-diesel with 480Nm

Power comes from a 2.4-litre clean diesel turbocharged engine producing 204 PS and 480 Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Mitsubishi quotes fuel consumption of 12.1 km/L, balancing the torque needed for off-road driving with everyday usability.

Super Select 4WD-II and seven driving modes

Built on a robust ladder-frame chassis, the Pajero combines Mitsubishi's Super Select 4WD-II system with seven driving modes to handle a range of surfaces and conditions.

It features the company's Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) technology, designed to help manage traction and vehicle stability across different driving situations.

Three-row cabin with upgraded technology

Inside, the new Pajero gets a three-row seating layout and dual large displays, bringing a more technology-focused cabin to the rugged SUV.

Equipment includes Mitsubishi's latest MI-PILOT driver assistance system and a front-centre airbag. The top-specification version also gets a 12-speaker Yamaha premium sound system.

The new Pajero has already launched in Thailand, and the strong response to its Japanese pre-orders suggests there is still considerable interest in Mitsubishi's flagship off-roader.
