Toyota Malaysia to expand public EV charging network to 42 charging points across 21 locations by H1 2027; part of multi-pathway idea

UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has announced plans to expand public electric vehicle charging infrastructure at Toyota and Lexus facilities across Malaysia, targeting 42 charging points at 21 locations by the first half of 2027.

The initiative is being undertaken in collaboration with local EV charging operators chargEV and JomCharge, with installations scheduled to take place progressively.

Importantly, the charging facilities will be accessible to EVs from all manufacturers, rather than being restricted to Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

The expansion is part of UMWT's Multi-Pathway strategy, which aims to support different forms of electrified mobility while improving access to charging infrastructure.

42 charging points across Toyota and Lexus locations

Under the planned rollout, the public charging network will be divided between the two charging operators.

  • chargEV: 38 charging points across 19 Toyota and Lexus locations.
  • JomCharge: Four charging points across two locations.
  • Total: 42 charging points across 21 sites nationwide.

According to UMWT, seven sites have already been completed, with the remaining installations scheduled to be introduced in phases.

The company expects the full network target to be reached within the first six months of 2027.

Motorists will be able to locate participating charging stations through the respective chargEV and JomCharge mobile applications.

However, UMWT has not disclosed the complete list of participating locations, charging speeds or the proportion of AC and DC chargers in its announcement.

Open to all EV brands

One of the key aspects of the initiative is that the charging stations will be open to the wider EV-driving public.

This means owners of electric vehicles from other manufacturers will also be able to use the facilities, subject to charger compatibility and the respective operators' access arrangements.

By installing public chargers at existing Toyota and Lexus facilities, UMWT intends to provide additional charging options at established automotive locations.

The initiative also comes as Toyota continues to pursue its Multi-Pathway approach to electrification, supporting a range of powertrain technologies rather than relying exclusively on battery-electric vehicles.

According to UMWT, the expansion is intended to make electrified mobility more accessible while addressing the practical requirements of vehicle ownership in Malaysia.
