XPeng G9L RHD production begins, Australia first before global rollout

XPeng has started production of the right-hand-drive G9L, with the first batch of production vehicles rolling off the line at the company's global manufacturing plant in Guangzhou on 11 September.

The G9L is due to roll out across 64 countries and regions and Australia will be the first market to receive it.

What is the XPeng G9L?

The G9L is a large five-seat SUV aimed at the global market. The China-spec model measures 5,120 mm long, 1,999 mm wide and 1,782 mm tall, with a 3,100 mm wheelbase.

The exterior features a full-width light bar with 480 LEDs, along with flush door handles and the tall, wide proportions expected of a large D-segment SUV.

Inside, the G9L takes a technology-focused approach, with AI-powered seats fitted with 91 pressure sensors, a built-in refrigerator and a 33-speaker audio system.

It also supports voice control from outside the vehicle and powered doors, while the powered side steps can deploy in 0.8 seconds and project a light curtain onto the ground.

EV and EREV powertrains

XPeng will offer the G9L with both battery-electric and range-extender (EREV) powertrains.

The EV comes in rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive forms, producing 367 PS and 585 PS respectively. Claimed CLTC range figures run from 672 km to 805 km, depending on specification.

The PowerX EREV uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine as a generator, with WLTP pure-electric range of 325–350 km.

Charging is handled by an 800V electrical architecture. Under ideal conditions, a nine-minute charge can add up to 450 km of range.

The G9L will also use XPeng's second-generation VLA (Visual-Language-Action) driver-assistance system, which is planned for rollout in overseas markets including Malaysia.

Could the G9L be heading to Malaysia?

XPeng has been expanding outside China at a much faster pace this year.

The company's second-quarter results showed revenue of RMB 19.74 billion (around RM 12 billion), up 8% year on year, while vehicle deliveries reached 103,295 units, a 64.8% increase from the first quarter.

Overseas deliveries topped 20,000 units in the second quarter, up 81% year on year, while overseas markets contributed 25% of XPeng's revenue in the first half of 2026.

XPeng now operates in 68 countries and regions, with its sales and service network continuing to expand.

XPeng's Malaysian distributor has previously said it plans to introduce a large SUV in the second half of the year. With the right-hand-drive G9L now entering production, the model could be one of the next new-energy SUVs considered for the Malaysian market.
