Xpeng G9L unveiled as a global flagship large SUV with up to 805 km range and 800V fast charging

Xpeng G9L revealed – is the global flagship the “large SUV” coming to Malaysia in second half of 2026?

Xpeng has officially revealed the G9L, a new large SUV that replaces the original G9 after only four years on sale and is being positioned as one of the brand’s two flagship models alongside the six-seat GX. The new model is notable not just for its size and equipment, but because it has been developed with global markets in mind, making it a stronger candidate for export markets such as Malaysia.

The timing of the reveal is also significant for Malaysian buyers following Bermaz’s comments at Auto China in April that a large SUV would be introduced locally in the second half of the year. That vehicle was initially assumed to be the GX, but the G9L’s global-market focus now makes it a more plausible fit for the upcoming launch window.

Visually, the G9L takes clear inspiration from the GX but adopts a sleeker and more sculpted body. The front and rear are dominated by full-width lighting signatures, with Xpeng saying the lamp system uses 480 individual LEDs. The design also moves toward flush glazing and a cleaner window line, while the door handles remain pop-out items.

Despite being a five-seater rather than a three-row SUV, the G9L is still a sizeable vehicle. It measures 5,120 mm long, 1,999 mm wide and 1,782 mm tall, with a 3,100 mm wheelbase. That places it squarely in the large SUV segment and gives it the physical presence expected of a top-end model.

Xpeng has also highlighted some of the G9L’s more unusual convenience features. The SUV can use outside voice control through 16 microphones and two exterior speakers, allowing certain functions to be operated before getting in. One of the features tied to this system is the powered doors, which deploy the side steps in under 0.8 seconds together with a projected light curtain.

Cabin equipment has not been fully detailed by the company yet, but local industry reporting points to a more tech-heavy interior than the outgoing G9. Items said to be on the list include AI-powered seats with 91 pressure sensors, a refrigerator and a 33-speaker audio system, all of which would push the G9L further into the premium SUV bracket.

Powertrain options are expected to include both pure electric and range-extender versions. For the EV model, Xpeng will reportedly offer a 367 PS rear-wheel-drive version and a 585 PS all-wheel-drive version, supported by LFP and NMC battery choices. Claimed CLTC range figures are between 672 km and 805 km, which translates to roughly 550 km to 660 km.

The G9L’s electric architecture is also a key part of its appeal. Xpeng says the SUV uses an 800-volt system that can add as much as 450 km of range in just nine minutes of DC fast charging, assuming suitable charging conditions.

A PowerX range-extender variant is also said to be on the way. In this version, a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine acts as a generator and is paired with a 150 PS motor in the base form. Outputs are quoted at 286 PS for the rear-drive model and 503 PS for the all-wheel-drive version, with electric-only range listed at 325 km and 350 km respectively on the WLTP cycle.

Driver assistance will be another major selling point. The G9L is set to use Xpeng’s second-generation Visual-Language-Action AI system, or VLA 2.0, which the company says will be rolled out to global markets in the coming years, including Malaysia. That makes the G9L not just a new flagship SUV, but also a preview of how Xpeng wants its next generation of overseas products to look and behave.
