XPENG X9 arrives in Australia at RM 280k! Is Malaysia next for the MONA L03?

On 27 July, XPENG unveiled its long-term strategy for Australia, announcing plans to launch five new models over the next six months while significantly expanding its sales and aftersales network.

The move marks another major step in XPENG's expansion across right-hand-drive (RHD) markets and could also offer a glimpse of what's to come for Malaysia, another key RHD market in the region.

Australia Expansion Gains Momentum

According to XPENG's latest plans, the flagship seven-seat electric MPV, the XPENG X9, is now open for pre-orders in Australia, with prices starting from AUD 89,900 (approximately RM 280k).

At the same time, the right-hand-drive version of the XPENG MONA L03, aimed at younger tech-savvy buyers, has made its Australian debut.

Beyond expanding its model lineup, XPENG also plans to establish three flagship smart mobility experience centres and 50 sales outlets across Australia within the next six months, further strengthening its retail and aftersales presence.

Another key highlight is the introduction of XPENG's dual-powertrain strategy in Australia.

In addition to battery electric vehicles, the company will also introduce its Kunpeng Super Electric Range Extender technology, providing Australian customers with greater flexibility and helping address range anxiety in a market known for its long-distance driving.

XPENG has also confirmed that its Turing AI intelligent driving system with Navigation Guided Pilot (NGP) is scheduled to arrive in Australia in 2027.

What Does This Mean for Malaysia?

Malaysia has become one of Southeast Asia's fastest-growing EV markets, with government incentives encouraging the arrival of Chinese brands such as BYD, Zeekr and Dongfeng.

Despite growing EV adoption, two challenges remain for many Malaysians: uneven charging infrastructure for long-distance interstate travel and the limited localisation of advanced driver assistance systems for RHD markets.

By introducing both BEVs and EREVs, XPENG is targeting markets such as Australia and Southeast Asia, where long travel distances and evolving charging infrastructure make powertrain flexibility particularly valuable.

An EREV combines the smooth and refined driving experience of an EV with lower running costs, while eliminating much of the range anxiety associated with long-distance travel. This appeals to Malaysians who frequently travel interstate or return to their hometowns during the annual balik kampung period.

Meanwhile, the Australian launch of the XPENG X9 and the introduction of the right-hand-drive MONA L03 suggest that XPENG has made significant progress in adapting its products for RHD markets.

Could Malaysia be next for the XPENG MONA L03? No official confirmation has been made so far.

For reference, XPENG now offers two models in Malaysia:

  • XPENG G6 – from RM 158,888
  • XPENG X9 – from RM 279,888
