KLIMS 2026: WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV and the Locally Assembled Premium MPV Challenge

GWM’s Flagship MPV Arrives With Local Credentials

GWM’s story in Malaysia has shifted gear. Once known mainly for the ORA Good Cat electric hatchback, the brand has spent the past eighteen months building a broader new-energy portfolio that now spans affordable EVs, hybrid SUVs and, most significantly, a premium plug-in hybrid MPV assembled locally. The WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV, which officially entered the market in January 2026 at RM269,800, is the clearest evidence yet that GWM views Malaysia as a priority market rather than a temporary export stop.

Local assembly is the critical detail. By building the G9 in Malaysia rather than importing it fully built-up, GWM gains flexibility on supply, shortens delivery times and signals a longer-term commitment that resonates with buyers who remain cautious about new brands. In a segment where after-sales confidence matters as much as cabin space, the CKD status gives GWM a talking point that pure importers struggle to match.

A Seven-Seat PHEV Built for the Premium Family Segment

The G9 is not a conventional family van with an electrified badge. Its 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine works with the Hi4 e-axle all-wheel-drive system to produce a combined output of roughly 442 PS and 642 Nm, figures that place it well beyond the performance envelope of most orthodox MPVs. For Malaysian owners who regularly tackle highway cruises to Genting or Johor, that surplus of power translates into relaxed high-speed cruising and confident overtaking even when the vehicle is fully loaded.

More importantly for daily use, local coverage indicates an electric-only range of around 170 km. That is sufficient for most urban school runs and office commutes without burning petrol, while DC fast-charging capability means the battery can be topped up during a lunch stop rather than an overnight wait. The practical effect is a vehicle that behaves as a short-range EV during the week and a long-distance tourer on weekends.

Redefining Rivals in the Luxury MPV Space

At RM269,800, the WEY G9 occupies a deliberate niche. It undercuts the established Japanese luxury blockbusters yet pitches itself above mass-market seven-seaters. Its direct challengers include the Denza D9, the GAC M8 PHEV and, indirectly, the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire twins that have long dominated Malaysian executive-family transport. Against those names, GWM is betting that a locally assembled PHEV with all-wheel-drive traction and substantial electric range offers a more future-proof proposition than a pure petrol flagship.

What the G9 Says About GWM’s Malaysia Bet

GWM’s local sales growth—reported at 177 per cent year-on-year—has given the brand the confidence to launch an ambitious model that many newer entrants would hesitate to field. Still, Malaysian consumers shopping at this price level routinely weigh brand heritage and resale value alongside equipment lists. The G9 must therefore prove that its cabin quality, powertrain refinement and service network can survive the scrutiny of buyers who might otherwise default to a Japanese or Korean badge.

The Hi4 architecture itself is part of GWM’s answer. By leading with a PHEV rather than a pure battery-electric MPV, the company sidesteps range anxiety for long-distance family trips while still offering meaningful zero-emission running. It is a pragmatic recognition that Malaysia’s charging infrastructure, though improving rapidly, remains uneven outside the Klang Valley.

The Road Ahead for Hi4 and Beyond

KLIMS 2026 gives GWM a stage to consolidate its transition from an EV importer to a full-spectrum new-energy player. The WEY G9 is likely to serve as the halo product on the stand, but its real purpose is to normalise the idea of a Chinese-branded, locally assembled luxury MPV in Malaysian driveways. If buyer acceptance follows, the G9 could open the door for further Hi4-powered models to join the lineup. For now, it stands as one of the more thoughtfully positioned premium family vehicles at the show.
