KLIMS 2026: ORA 5 HEV Expands GWM's Urban Hybrid Story

ORA Moves Beyond the Small EV Image

At KLIMS 2026, the ORA 5 HEV is more than another compact crossover on the GWM stand. In Malaysia, ORA has been understood mainly through the Good Cat, a design-led urban EV with a distinct personality. The ORA 5 HEV pushes that identity into a broader direction. It keeps the brand's emphasis on styling, technology and young urban lifestyles, but changes the powertrain discussion from battery-electric driving to a more mainstream hybrid format.

That makes it strategically useful for GWM. The brand already has the Haval H6 HEV, Tank 300 and 500, and the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV to build its hybrid and new-energy narrative in Malaysia. The ORA 5 HEV brings that strategy closer to connected city users: young professionals, couples and buyers who want a stylish crossover with low fuel use and long range, without needing to plan their life around charging access.

Hi2 Intelligent Hybrid Technology

The central change is GWM's new Hi2 intelligent hybrid technology. In GWM's explanation, H stands for Hybrid, i stands for Intelligent, and 2 reflects two benefits working together: low fuel consumption and strong performance. In practical terms, the system is meant to stop buyers from choosing between economy and response. It tries to deliver both in one urban-friendly package.

The ORA 5 HEV uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine paired with a two-speed DHT hybrid transmission and a 1.09 kWh battery. Combined output is listed at 223 PS and 476 Nm, with a 0-100 km/h time of 7.7 seconds. Those figures are stronger than what many buyers expect from a fuel-saving compact crossover. At the same time, GWM quotes combined fuel consumption of 4.4 L/100 km and a driving range of more than 1,100 km, which gives the car a clear role for both daily commuting and longer intercity trips.

Compact Enough for the City

The ORA 5 HEV measures 4,471 mm long, 1,833 mm wide and 1,641 mm tall, with a 2,720 mm wheelbase. That places it between a compact SUV and an urban crossover. It is larger and more substantial than an entry-level city car, but still compact enough for shopping malls, office parking and daily urban use.

The 2,720 mm wheelbase is important because it gives the ORA 5 HEV a stronger cabin-space foundation than its friendly exterior might suggest. This is not a vehicle that relies on size to look imposing. Its appeal is in the balance between useful interior room, manageable exterior dimensions, low fuel consumption and long range. For Malaysian buyers who split their time between city roads, highways and weekend errands, that combination is likely to matter more than a single headline specification.

Design Remains the ORA Signature

The ORA 5 HEV does not abandon ORA's design-led identity. Waterdrop headlights, a hidden-design taillight and petal-style low-drag wheels give it a softer, more expressive character than many conventional compact SUVs. The design does not try to look rugged or aggressive. It is closer to a lifestyle product: modern, approachable and distinctive, while still shaped around practical crossover use.

The design has also been recognised internationally. The ORA 5 received the Design of the Year title at the 2025 London Design Awards, where it was described as the first production vehicle to receive the competition's highest honour. Awards do not sell cars by themselves, but they help explain why ORA positions this model differently from a normal family SUV. It is trying to win attention through design and user experience rather than off-road imagery or luxury cues.

A Fuel-Efficiency Record as Technical Support

The ORA 5 HEV also carries a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for low fuel consumption by a production hybrid SUV across all direct-administered municipalities in China. The record figure was 3.74 L/100 km over a 3,004 km real-world driving challenge. That number should be understood as a result achieved under a specific route and set of conditions, not as a promise that every owner will repeat it daily. The more useful reference for ordinary buyers remains the quoted 4.4 L/100 km combined fuel consumption and range above 1,100 km.

For Malaysia, the ORA 5 HEV's value lies in lowering the psychological barrier to new-energy driving. It does not depend on public charging like a full EV, and it does not require home charging like a plug-in hybrid. Yet it still offers low fuel use, strong torque and long range. At KLIMS 2026, it gives GWM a more complete story: not only rugged SUVs, premium MPVs and small EVs, but also a stylish hybrid crossover for mainstream urban users. Its final market impact will depend on local specification, pricing and aftersales support, but the direction is clear. ORA is evolving from a design-led EV nameplate into a broader urban mobility proposition within GWM's Malaysian portfolio.
