Freelander 8's massive 46.3-inch display is the largest in the industry, but there's a catch

Chery-JLR has revealed the Freelander 8 in China with a dashboard-wide 46.3-inch 8K panoramic intelligent display, putting the SUV into the growing race for oversized in-car screens. The model is aimed at a tech-heavy premium buyer and arrives as automakers in China continue to treat cabin digital hardware as a key selling point.

The display is the headline feature. Chery-JLR says the unit stretches 46.3 inches across the dashboard, uses 8K resolution and can reach up to 1,000 nits of peak brightness. While the MBUX Hyperscreen utilizes three displays to achieve an ultrawide result, the "larger" display in the Freelander 8 lacks the horizontal real estate of the MBUX system.

The company says the infotainment system is built around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8397 automotive processor. Chery-JLR claims the chip brings a threefold increase in CPU and GPU performance, along with a 12-fold jump in NPU computing power compared with the older Snapdragon 8295 platform.

Driver assistance is handled separately by Huawei. The Freelander 8 uses the latest Qiankun Intelligent Driving ADS 5 system, supported by an 896-line LiDAR sensor. Chery-JLR says the sensor can detect a 14-centimetre object from 120 metres away, underlining the SUV’s focus on advanced sensing hardware.

The Freelander brand is being developed through a broader collaboration involving Chery-JLR, Huawei, CATL and Qualcomm. That mix of partners reflects how Chinese-market vehicles are increasingly combining local software, battery expertise and global chip suppliers in a single product.

Under the body, the Freelander 8 uses a 60-kWh battery pack and a range-extender powertrain. Chery-JLR says the SUV can travel up to 221 km in pure electric driving before the battery is depleted.

Once the battery is low, a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine takes over as a generator rather than as a direct drive source. The engine produces 115 kW, or 154 hp, and its role is to keep the battery charged instead of powering the wheels.

Charging is another key part of the specification sheet. The Freelander 8 uses an 800-volt electrical architecture with 6C charging capability, and Chery-JLR says the battery can be replenished in less than 15 minutes under the right conditions.

The Freelander 8 is one of the most closely watched new launches in the Chinese market because it combines a large-format screen, high-end driver assistance and fast-charging range-extender hardware in a single package. Plus, it also marks the first product under the new Chery-Jaguar Land Rover partnership.
