Driving in Malaysia comes with its own set of challenges, from peak-hour traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur to navigating the multi-storey car parks found at shopping malls. For many drivers, the parking brake is something they use almost every day.

The three types you are most likely to come across are the electronic parking brake (EPB), the traditional manual handbrake and, on some cars, a foot-operated parking brake.
So which one makes the most sense for Malaysian drivers? Here's how they compare.

The traditional handbrake is the familiar lever mounted between the driver's and front passenger's seats. Pulling the lever mechanically applies the rear brakes.
Pros
Simple and durable: With a straightforward mechanical setup, there are fewer electronic components to worry about. It can also still be operated if the car's battery is completely flat.
Direct feel and low running costs: The mechanical design is relatively inexpensive to maintain and gives the driver a direct, familiar feel when applying the brake.
Cons
Takes up space: The handbrake lever occupies part of the centre console that could otherwise be used for storage.
Requires some effort: You have to physically pull the lever, and getting enough force when parking on a steep slope can take some effort.

EPB has become a common feature on modern cars. Instead of pulling a lever, you simply press or flick a small switch, usually marked with a "P". It is often paired with Auto Hold.
Pros
Easy to use: A simple press of a button is all it takes to apply or release the parking brake. On some cars, it will also release automatically when you select D and accelerate.
Auto Hold is particularly useful in Malaysian traffic: In cities such as Kuala Lumpur and Penang, stop-and-go traffic can quickly become tiring. Auto Hold means you do not have to keep your foot on the brake pedal every time the car comes to a stop, giving your right foot a much-needed break in heavy traffic.
Convenient safety features: EPB can automatically apply the parking brake when the car is switched off, reducing the chance of forgetting to engage it. Some systems can also provide controlled braking if the parking-brake switch is activated while driving.
Cons
Depends on electrical power: If the car's battery is completely flat, releasing an EPB can be more complicated and may require a jump-start or a specific emergency-release procedure.
More expensive to repair: If the electric motor or other EPB components fail, repairs can cost more than replacing a conventional mechanical handbrake cable.

The foot-operated parking brake can be found on some Japanese cars, including certain SUVs and MPVs. It is usually located to the left of the brake and accelerator pedals. Press it down with your left foot to engage it, then press it again to release it.
Pros
Frees up the centre console: With no handbrake lever or EPB switch taking up space, the area around the centre console and gear selector can be cleaner and more spacious.
Cons
Takes some getting used to: Drivers who are unfamiliar with the layout may find left-foot operation less intuitive than a conventional handbrake or EPB.
Less accessible to passengers: Because the parking brake is located in the driver's footwell, it is difficult for a front passenger to operate it in an emergency.
For convenience and daily city driving: EPB has the edge. Combined with Auto Hold, it is particularly useful in Malaysia's frequent stop-and-go traffic and can make long periods behind the wheel less tiring.
For simplicity and lower maintenance costs: The traditional handbrake remains a straightforward choice. Its mechanical design is familiar, relatively simple and does not depend on the car's electrical system.
For cabin space: The foot-operated parking brake makes the most of the space around the centre console, although whether you prefer its operation largely comes down to personal preference.
So, when choosing your next car, which type of parking brake do you prefer?
