In March 2026, UMW Toyota Motor officially launched the fourth-generation Harrier in Malaysia. For the first time locally, the Harrier is offered exclusively as a Hybrid, with the petrol-powered variant discontinued.

Priced at RM289,000, this represents an RM12,000 premium over the outgoing 2.0L Luxury SE (RM277,000). Compared to the earlier entry-level 2.0L variant, the price hike is nearly RM40,000.

For a five-seater SUV that is neither built for off-roading nor cargo-hauling, how does it command this price tag? And who is actually buying it?

Powertrain and Fuel Economy

The Harrier 2.5 HEV is powered by an A25A-FXS 2.5-litre Dynamic Force four-cylinder petrol engine producing 178 PS and 221 Nm. Paired with Toyota's fourth-generation THS hybrid system and an electric motor delivering 120 PS and 202 Nm, the front-wheel-drive SUV delivers a total system output of 217 PS.

Fuel consumption is rated at 4.7 L/100km, a notable improvement over the previous 2.0L petrol model's 6.5 L/100km. Based on an average annual mileage of 20,000 km, this translates to over RM700 in annual fuel savings.

Top speed is capped at 180 km/h—adequate, though far from sporty.

Dimensions and Practicality

Underpinned by the TNGA-K platform, the SUV measures 4,740 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, and 1,660 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,690 mm—30 mm longer than its predecessor (2,660 mm), resulting in a wider, lower stance.

Boot capacity stands at 396 litres, expandable via 60:40 split-folding rear seats. It features a 55-litre fuel tank and a kerb weight of 1,695 kg.

Exterior and Interior Equipment

Standard exterior kit includes Bi-LED headlamps, LED daytime running lights, LED front fog lamps, a hands-free powered tailgate with kick sensor, a fixed panoramic glass roof, and 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 225/60R18 tyres.

Active safety is handled by the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) 3.0 ADAS suite: Pre-Collision System (with autonomous emergency braking), Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, Lane Departure Alert, Adaptive High-beam System, and Road Sign Assist.

Additional driver aids include Parking Support Brake, Blind Spot Monitor, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert with auto brake.

Warranty and Aftersales

A five-year, unlimited-mileage factory vehicle warranty is standard, complemented by an eight-year, unlimited-mileage hybrid component warranty covering the hybrid battery, inverter, and power management control unit.

Customers can opt to extend the hybrid warranty by two years for a total of 10 years. The warranty package is fully transferable to the next owner. There is also a 10-year parts availability guarantee.

Who Is Buying the Harrier?

The typical Harrier buyer is rarely a first-time car owner. Many are upgrading from a Camry, Accord, or an older Harrier. When moving up, they prioritise superior build quality, refined NVH levels, and excellent fuel economy.

A third row or off-road capability is not on their wishlist. Instead, they seek a daily driver that offers an upmarket interior, plush seating comfort, seamless and refined power delivery, and fuel efficiency.
