Toyota Yaris Cross vs Honda HR-V: Choosing between a 3.6L/100km hybrid and pure turbo power

In May 2026, the Toyota Yaris Cross officially made its debut in Malaysia, representing a major offensive by Toyota in the B-segment SUV market.

Priced at RM99,900 for the 1.5S petrol and RM109,900 for the 1.5S HEV hybrid, this locally assembled (CKD) model comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) across the range.

On the other hand, the Honda HR-V has been a mainstay in Malaysia for years, priced at RM115,900 for the base 1.5 S, RM130,900 for the 1.5 E, RM137,900 for the 1.5 V, and RM143,900 for the range-topping 1.5 e:HEV RS.

One is a fresh contender, the other a seasoned veteran. With entry points starting at RM99,900 and RM115,900 respectively, and a battle between hybrid efficiency and turbo performance, this comparison is a must-read for anyone looking to spend between RM100k and RM140k on a B-segment SUV.

Price and Variants

The Yaris Cross keeps it simple in Malaysia with just two variants: the 1.5S petrol at RM99,900 and the 1.5S HEV hybrid at RM109,900. Both variants are locally assembled (CKD) at the Bukit Raja plant in Shah Alam.

The HR-V, meanwhile, offers a wider range of options. There are four variants: the 1.5 S at RM115,900, the 1.5 E at RM130,900, the 1.5 V at RM137,900, and the range-topping 1.5 e:HEV RS at RM143,900.

Comparing the entry-level Yaris Cross 1.5S (RM99,900) to the base HR-V 1.5 S (RM115,900), there is a price gap of RM16,000.

Stack the Yaris Cross HEV (RM109,900) against the HR-V 1.5 E (RM130,900), and the difference is RM21,000. Even when compared to the HR-V's base naturally aspirated variant, the Yaris Cross is significantly cheaper.

In terms of kit, both Yaris Cross variants come standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, automatic wipers, and disc brakes all around.

By comparison, the entry-level HR-V is relatively bare-bones; you have to step up to the 1.5 E (RM130,900) for the turbo engine, or go straight to the top-spec RS (RM143,900) for the hybrid.

Powertrain

This is where the two cars show the greatest difference in character.

The petrol Yaris Cross is powered by a 2NR-VE 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine making 106 PS and 138 Nm of torque, paired with a D-CVT gearbox.

The hybrid version uses a 2NR-VEX 1.5-litre engine and dual electric motors for a combined output of 111 PS, mated to an E-CVT gearbox. Its official fuel consumption is a stellar 3.6 L/100km.

Over in the Honda camp, the HR-V 1.5 S gets a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine putting out 119 hp and 145 Nm, doing 0-100 km/h in 12.1 seconds.

The 1.5 E and 1.5 V variants are powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine pushing 179 hp and 240 Nm.

The top-spec 1.5 e:HEV RS hybrid features an electric motor working with a 1.5-litre engine, producing a combined output of 234 hp.

On paper, the Yaris Cross (both petrol and hybrid) lags behind the HR-V's turbo and hybrid variants in terms of output.

The HR-V 1.5 V's 179 hp eclipses the Yaris Cross HEV's 111 PS by 68 hp, and its 0-100 km/h time of 8.7 to 8.8 seconds is also significantly quicker than the Toyota.

However, the Yaris Cross HEV offers something the HR-V cannot match: class-leading fuel economy.

At an official 3.6 L/100km, it is practically unmatched in this segment. If you have a long daily commute, the fuel savings will accumulate to a significant amount over a year.

Cabin Space and Practicality

The Yaris Cross measures 4,310 mm long and 1,770 mm wide, with a 2,620 mm wheelbase. Its boot space stands at 471 litres.

The HR-V measures 4,347 mm long and 1,790 mm wide, with a 2,610 mm wheelbase.

Despite being 37 mm longer and 20 mm wider than the Yaris Cross, its wheelbase is actually 10 mm shorter. Boot space is rated at 335 litres.

Despite having a smaller footprint, the Yaris Cross boasts a 10 mm longer wheelbase and a boot that is a massive 136 litres larger than the Honda's.

Toyota has done a stellar job with packaging here. The Yaris Cross also offers a ground clearance of 210 mm, which is higher than the HR-V's 196 mm.

That said, the HR-V holds a trump card: rear passenger comfort and flexibility.

Honda's signature Ultra Seats allow multiple folding configurations, making it the benchmark for cabin versatility. If you frequently carry passengers rather than cargo, the HR-V's rear cabin offers better comfort.

Tech and Safety Features

This is where the Yaris Cross hits hard. Features that come standard on both of its variants are only available on the mid-to-high spec levels of the HR-V.

The Yaris Cross comes standard across the range with a 7-inch digital instrument display, a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a power-adjustable driver's seat.

The hybrid variant adds a wireless charger and perforated leather seats.

Safety is top-tier right from the base spec.

The entire range gets six airbags and the full Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite, which includes Pre-Collision Warning, All-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Departure Warning and Prevention, and Automatic High Beam. A 360-degree panoramic view monitor and tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) are also standard.

Meanwhile, the entry-level HR-V 1.5 S is rather basic.

If you want a 360-degree camera, you will have to step up to the 1.5 V (RM137,900) or the 1.5 e:HEV RS (RM143,900).

While six airbags are standard across the range, the active safety suite is not as comprehensively equipped in the lower variants as it is in the Yaris Cross.

One crucial detail is that the HR-V still relies on Honda LaneWatch, which only uses a camera on the left side, instead of a proper Blind Spot Monitor (BSM).

The Yaris Cross, on the other hand, comes standard with a proper BSM and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), making it more practical in real-world driving.

Resale Value and Running Costs

In terms of resale value, both Honda and Toyota are giants in the Malaysian second-hand market.

The HR-V has established a very stable track record over the years. While the newly launched Yaris Cross has yet to build up resale data, Toyota's brand equity ensures it will likely hold its value well.

When it comes to running costs, the Yaris Cross HEV's 3.6 L/100km fuel consumption is a massive advantage.

For comparison, the HR-V 1.5 V has a claimed fuel consumption of 6.5 L/100km, while the hybrid e:HEV RS is rated at 4.1 L/100km—though you do have to pay a premium for the Honda hybrid.

As for warranty, the Yaris Cross comes with a 5-year/unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty, with the hybrid battery, inverter, and ECU covered by an 8-year/unlimited-mileage warranty.

The HR-V's standard package also offers a 5-year/unlimited-mileage warranty.

Verdict

The Yaris Cross and HR-V might both be Japanese SUVs, but they target very different buyers.

Go for the Yaris Cross, and you get a lower entry price (from RM99,900), a more comprehensive standard safety kit (TSS, ACC, and 360-degree camera across the board), class-leading fuel economy (3.6 L/100km for the HEV), and a larger boot (471 litres).

The trade-offs are a less punchy powertrain (111 PS vs the Honda's 179 hp) and less flexible rear seats.

Opt for the HR-V, and you get superior performance (179 hp for the turbo variants), more choice with four different variants, the highly versatile rear Ultra Seats, and a proven track record.

The downsides are the higher entry price (from RM115,900), having to pay more for the higher specs to get ACC and the 360-degree camera, and higher fuel consumption compared to the Yaris Cross HEV.

Both are excellent SUVs in their own right, but they cater to different needs.

If you are looking for the best bang for your buck, prioritizing fuel efficiency and a generous equipment list, the Yaris Cross 1.5S HEV is the smarter, more practical buy.

If you prefer a more engaging drive, want turbo power, and need a highly versatile rear cabin, the HR-V 1.5 V is well worth the extra cash.

Decide what matters most to you, and your choice will be clear.
