In Malaysia's hot and humid weather, switching on the air-con is almost the first thing most drivers do after starting the engine. But how often do you simply press the recirculation button and leave it on for the entire journey?
The car's recirculation and fresh-air modes each have their uses. Switching between them at the right time can help cool the cabin faster, keep the air feeling fresher and, in some situations, reduce the load on the air-conditioning system.

Recirculation closes off the flow of outside air and keeps circulating the air already inside the cabin.
When the car has been sitting in the sun: Malaysian sunshine can turn a parked car into an oven. Switching to recirculation helps prevent more hot air from entering the cabin, allowing the air-con to bring the temperature down more quickly.
In heavy traffic or behind lorries: When stuck in traffic or driving behind a large lorry, recirculation can help keep exhaust fumes, smoke and unpleasant smells from entering the cabin.
During haze: When air quality deteriorates or haze is present, recirculation helps reduce the amount of airborne particles entering the cabin from outside.

Fresh-air mode brings outside air into the cabin, replacing some of the air inside.
For the first few minutes after parking in the sun: Interior plastics can release volatile compounds when exposed to high temperatures. After getting into a hot car, open the windows and use fresh-air mode first to flush out the hot, stale air. After driving for a minute or two, you can switch back to recirculation to cool the cabin more efficiently.
On long drives or at motorway speeds: Keeping the air-con on recirculation for too long can allow carbon dioxide levels inside the cabin to rise, which may contribute to drowsiness. Switching to fresh-air mode from time to time brings in outside air and helps keep the cabin ventilated.
When the windows start to fog up: Rainy weather can create a big difference between the temperature and humidity inside and outside the car, causing the windscreen to fog up. Fresh-air mode can help balance the cabin conditions and clear the mist more quickly.

Don't leave recirculation on all the time: It is easy to leave the system in recirculation simply because it keeps the cabin cool. When driving through areas with clean air, such as the countryside or on a motorway, switch to fresh-air mode for a few minutes from time to time to keep the cabin ventilated.
Let the automatic air-con do the work: If your car has an auto climate-control function, the system can usually adjust the temperature and, on some models, switch between recirculation and fresh-air modes automatically based on cabin conditions and air quality. That means less need to keep reaching for the buttons yourself.
