From copycat cars to Wink Y01: Zotye begins a new chapter with global ambitions

Zotye has officially unveiled the international version of the Wink Y01, holding a launch event for the model as the company works to rebuild its presence in the car industry. The event also marks the start of pilot production for the Wink Y01, which Zotye sees as a key model for its overseas expansion.

For years, Zotye was best known for cars that looked remarkably similar to models from major international brands. During the rapid expansion of China's automotive industry, its heavily imitative designs became so well known that the company was often described online as a pioneer of the "copycat car" era.

How Zotye started out

Founded in 2003, Zotye did not begin by developing every model from scratch. Instead, the company used acquisitions and technical partnerships to get products into the market quickly.

One of its earliest and best-known models was the Zotye 2008 SUV.

There is a particularly familiar connection for Malaysian readers. The 2008 used the production line, tooling and basic architecture of the Daihatsu Terios, the same model that formed the basis of the Perodua Kembara.

Zotye's early business model was straightforward. It acquired established overseas platforms and tooling, then assembled vehicles under its own badge, sometimes using engines from suppliers such as Mitsubishi.

That gave the company a fast route into the market without having to develop everything in-house.

The SR9 and Zotye's copycat era

Zotye became much more famous — and much more controversial — as its approach to vehicle design became increasingly obvious.

The best-known example was the Zotye SR9.

The SUV looked extremely close to the Porsche Macan, from its body shape and side profile to the dashboard and centre console.

A joke that circulated in China at the time was that the easiest way to get close to owning a Porsche was to buy a Zotye.

The SR9 was far from the only example. Zotye also produced models that drew obvious comparisons with cars from Audi, Volkswagen and other major international brands.

The formula brought plenty of attention and sales, but it also made the company a regular target of criticism. As competition in China's car market intensified, Zotye eventually ran into financial trouble and production was suspended.

A clean-sheet look for the Wink Y01

Zotye is now trying to make a fresh start with the Wink Y01.

The Wink Y01 uses a much cleaner design, with a smooth bonnet, simple surfacing and a closed-off front end.

Its most distinctive feature is the lighting. The front gets triangular headlamps connected by a three-section full-width LED light bar, while a concealed air intake is integrated into the front panel.

The lighting assembly contains 174 LEDs, giving the car a distinctive signature when the lights are switched on.

Small car, overseas ambitions

The Wink Y01 has been developed for international buyers and is one of the models Zotye is counting on as it rebuilds its business.

The car measures 3,912 mm long, 1,745 mm wide and 1,545 mm tall, with a 2,520 mm wheelbase. Those dimensions put it in the small-car class and make the Y01 a natural fit for urban driving.

Zotye has now completed the main development and preparation work for the international Wink Y01, including engineering updates, production-line commissioning, assembly process checks and pilot-production validation.

The car has entered pilot production, bringing Zotye closer to full-scale manufacturing and the start of its next push into overseas markets.
