As electric vehicles (EVs) become more common, the health of the battery has a direct impact on driving range and long-term resale value.
Modern NMC and LFP batteries are designed to last for many years, but the way you charge, park and drive an EV can still affect how quickly the battery loses capacity over time.

Here are some simple habits that can help slow battery degradation and keep your EV's battery in better shape.
EV batteries generally prefer moderate, predictable charge levels. Keeping the battery constantly full or running it very low can put more stress on the cells.

Aim for 20–80% for everyday driving: If you are only commuting and do not need the car's full range, there is little reason to charge to 100% every time. Keeping the battery somewhere between 20% and 80% for daily use can reduce the stress associated with operating at the extremes.
Avoid running below 10%: Try not to wait until the battery warning appears — or until the car is almost completely out of charge — before plugging in. Very low battery levels combined with high power demand can put additional stress on the battery.
Don't leave the car sitting fully charged: If the EV is going to be parked for several days or longer, keeping the battery at around 50% is generally preferable to leaving it at 100% or nearly empty.
DC fast charging is convenient, but repeated high-power charging can generate more heat and put greater demands on the battery's thermal-management system.

Use AC charging where possible: If you have a home charger, overnight AC charging is a convenient way to top up the battery. The lower charging power also means less heat is generated compared with high-power DC charging.
Save DC fast charging for when you need it: There is nothing wrong with using a fast charger on a long trip or when you are short on time. However, try not to rely on high-power DC charging for every top-up.
Charging power also drops as the battery gets closer to full, particularly after around 80% or 90%. If you do not need the extra range, there is little benefit in staying connected once charging slows significantly.
Temperature has a major effect on battery performance and ageing.

Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight: Parking an EV in the hot sun for long periods can accelerate battery ageing, particularly in very hot weather. Whenever possible, choose a shaded area or covered car park.
Use pre-conditioning: In very hot or cold weather, use the car's pre-conditioning function while it is still plugged in. This allows the vehicle to use electricity from the grid to cool or heat the cabin and, where supported, condition the battery before you drive, rather than drawing that energy from the battery while on the road.

Avoid repeated hard acceleration: One of the things that makes an EV so enjoyable is the instant torque. But heavy acceleration also means a large amount of current is drawn from the battery in a short period, generating more heat.
Driving smoothly can help improve energy efficiency while reducing unnecessary stress on the battery.
Use regenerative braking sensibly: Adjust the level of regenerative braking to suit your driving conditions and comfort. It can recover some energy during deceleration while making it easier to control the car's speed without relying as heavily on the brakes.
There is no single trick that will stop an EV battery from ageing. But sensible charge-level management, less reliance on DC fast charging, avoiding excessive heat and smoother driving can all help slow down battery degradation.
In other words, you do not need to treat your EV battery like a piece of delicate electronics. Just avoid keeping it full, empty or extremely hot for long periods, and let the car's battery-management system do the rest.
