Jetour Dashing vs Jaecoo J5 in Malaysia: RM1,200 Apart, one puts the budget into sheet metal, the other into airbags and radars

Parked side by side in the very same showroom, the price gap between them is just RM1,200. The Jetour Dashing Comfort is tagged at RM106,800, while the Jaecoo J5 sits at RM108,000. In the grand scheme of a car-buying budget, this difference is practically loose change on your insurance premium, or the cost of window tinting and coil mats after taking delivery.

Line up their spec sheets, however, and the trade-off becomes glaringly obvious. The Dashing Comfort delivers a larger footprint and more power; the J5 channels virtually every extra cent into airbags and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

RM1,200 cannot get you the best of both worlds, so you have to pick a side: do you want sheer size and grunt, or an extra pair of airbags and a system that steps on the brakes for you?

Pricing

Both models come from the same parent group and share the showroom floor, separated by a mere RM1,200 price tag. The Dashing Comfort retails for RM106,800, whereas the J5 goes for RM108,000. This price difference will not make or break your loan eligibility; it simply comes down to where you prefer that money spent.

Safety

The Dashing Comfort comes with four airbags: driver, front passenger, and front side units. The J5 raises that to six, courtesy of full-length side curtain airbags covering both rows. Curtain airbags protect occupants' heads during side impacts and rollover accidents—a crucial safety barrier missing from the Dashing's cabin.

The disparity in active safety is even more pronounced. The J5 features Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Keep Assist (LKA) with steering intervention, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and a 360-degree surround-view monitor as standard. The Dashing Comfort gets by with standard cruise control, no AEB, no lane assist, and only a conventional reverse camera instead of a full 360-degree view.

This goes far deeper than a few checkmarks on a spec sheet. The J5 genuinely goes the extra mile when it comes to "braking before an impact" and "deploying curtain airbags during a crash."

The Dashing does not lack baseline active safety—Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control (TCS), and ABS are all accounted for—yet when it comes to the two aspects family car buyers value most, airbag count and AEB, the J5 holds all the cards. For an RM1,200 premium, this is a total no-brainer.

Powertrain & Dimensions

Under the hood, the Dashing Comfort features a 1.5-litre turbo engine churning out 154 hp and 230 Nm, paired with a six-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT). The J5 makes do with 145 hp and 210 Nm, mated to a CVT.

With an extra 9 hp and 20 Nm on tap, the Dashing requires less throttle effort when overtaking on the highway or tackling inclines fully laden, while the DCT delivers snappier, more direct kickdowns compared to a CVT flaring its revs.

Dimensionally, the Dashing sits a class above. It measures 4,590 mm in length against the J5's 4,380 mm, with a 2,720 mm wheelbase versus 2,620 mm—giving it a 100 mm advantage. This extra wheelbase translates directly into rear legroom, where the Dashing undoubtedly offers a more generous rear seating experience than the J5.

While the photos above make the boot size difference seem substantial, that is largely an optical trick of camera angles. In reality, it is 486 litres against 480 litres—a negligible 6-litre gap that you will hardly notice during day-to-day runs.

Equipment

The J5 concentrates its equipment upgrades where your hands and eyes go every day: a 13.2-inch portrait touchscreen, dual-zone automatic climate control, powered adjustment for both front seats, a panoramic glass roof, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360-degree camera system, and front parking sensors.

The Dashing Comfort settles for a 10.25-inch infotainment display, single-zone air-conditioning, a powered driver's seat with manual passenger adjustment, no panoramic roof, wired CarPlay, four speakers, and no front parking sensors.

While none of these are absolute deal-breakers on paper, they tangibly elevate your daily commute. Dual-zone climate control is a godsend in Malaysia's scorching midday heat, letting the passenger set their own temp; wireless CarPlay eliminates cable clutter; and the panoramic roof floods the cabin with light.

The Dashing banks its budget on sheet metal and mechanicals, whereas the J5 lavishes it across daily touchpoints inside the cabin.

Warranty

Both contenders come with a comprehensive 7-year/150,000 km manufacturer warranty, whichever comes first. The Dashing edges ahead with an exceptional 10-year/1,000,000 km engine warranty, alongside 5 free scheduled services covering parts and labour.

The Verdict

The Dashing Comfort makes sense for buyers who prioritise cabin room and performance above all else, and are willing to compromise on safety kit.

Its 154 hp and 230 Nm deliver far more composure at highway cruising speeds and under full loads, its 2,720 mm wheelbase provides legroom the J5 simply cannot match, and the 10-year engine warranty with 5 free services offers undeniable peace of mind.

The catch? You settle for four airbags, no AEB, no Lane Keep Assist, no Adaptive Cruise Control, and zero curtain airbag protection in the cabin.

The J5 is tailor-made for those who put family safety and daily driving convenience front and centre. Six airbags, AEB, Lane Keep Assist, ACC, and a 360-degree camera represent a remarkably comprehensive safety suite at the RM108,000 price mark.

Add in the panoramic roof, dual-zone climate control, wireless CarPlay, and a powered tailgate, and it clearly caters better to the everyday commute. The trade-offs are 9 hp less output, an overall length that is 210 mm shorter, tighter rear legroom, and a CVT powertrain that lacks the immediate punch of a dual-clutch unit.

For just RM1,200, there is a clear safety divide between the two. If you regularly ferry passengers in the rear, the J5's side curtain airbags and AEB could prove priceless when it matters most—far more than what an extra 9 hp can ever buy.

Conversely, if the rear bench sits empty most of the time and you do almost all the driving yourself, the Dashing's 154 hp and larger footprint will serve you better daily. Just be fully aware of the two critical safety omissions before putting your signature on the hire purchase form.
