Proton Saga Standard vs Perodua Bezza 1.3 X: The RM4,990 split between sticker price and trade-in value

Buying a car and selling a car are two very different sums. Many buyers look only at the first: what the monthly instalment comes to, and whether they can scrape together the down payment. But if you plan to upgrade within three to five years, the second sum could well hurt more than the first.

The Saga Standard retails at RM38,990, while the Bezza 1.3 X asks for RM43,980. Stretched across a seven-year hire purchase loan, that RM4,990 difference works out to less than RM60 a month.

It is an amount easily forgotten over a quick lunch and a cup of coffee. But three years down the road when you pull into a used car dealership, that RM4,990 turns into a figure demanding far closer scrutiny.

Powertrain

With the Saga MC3, the entire range gains a 1.5-litre four-cylinder i-GT engine delivering 120 PS and 150 Nm. The Bezza 1.3 X runs a 1.3-litre four-cylinder unit pushing 94 hp and 121 Nm. That is an extra 26 PS and 29 Nm in the Saga's favour. Both pair their engines with a four-speed automatic gearbox — one sourced from Aisin, the other from Akashi-Kikai.

In bumper-to-bumper crawls along KL's Federal Highway, that 26 PS advantage is admittedly hard to spot. Off-the-line get-up-and-go and low-speed responsiveness are adequate on both. Shift the backdrop to the North-South Expressway, however, and the story changes completely.

When the Saga accelerates from 80 km/h to 110 km/h to clear a slow-moving lorry, you drop your right foot and find power in reserve — without having to plan your overtaking move miles ahead.

Pulling off the same manoeuvre in the Bezza requires building momentum well beforehand, giving yourself plenty of distance and time.

If you travel outstation once or twice a month, that 26 PS deficit will remind you on every single overtake. But if your daily commute never tops 40 km, the gap will likely never cross your mind as a reason for regret.

Ownership Costs

Perodua claims an official fuel consumption figure of 4.5 L/100km for the Bezza 1.3 X, against 5.1 L/100km for the Saga Standard 4AT.

Based on an annual mileage of 20,000 km with RON95 pegged at RM2.05 per litre, the Bezza racks up roughly RM1,845 in annual fuel costs compared to the Saga's RM2,091. That is a difference of RM246 a year, or roughly RM1,230 over five years.

On the road tax front, the Bezza 1.3 X costs RM70 annually versus RM90 for the Saga. Over five years, that is another RM100 saved. Combine petrol and road tax, and the Bezza undercuts the Saga by around RM1,330 across a five-year ownership tenure.

When it comes to servicing, the Saga's five-year/100,000 km scheduled maintenance bill starts from around RM3,357, with the 4AT variant coming in roughly RM174 lower than the brand baseline. The Bezza's five-year maintenance tab sits at approximately RM3,149.

Maintenance costs between the two are neck and neck; in fact, the Saga saves around RM140 in routine upkeep over the Bezza.

Hence, the Bezza's running-cost advantage stems almost entirely from fuel economy. Stacked against the RM4,990 upfront price difference, that RM1,330 saving offsets barely a quarter of the premium.

If running costs are your sole metric, the Bezza cannot claw back that extra cash through fuel savings alone. Resale value, however, rewrites this equation entirely.

Resale Value

The Bezza boasts a three-year residual value of 82.9%, against the Saga's 71.6%. Translate those percentages into actual figures, and the contrast becomes starkly apparent.

Assuming both cars were purchased at list price: the Bezza would fetch roughly RM36,459 after three years, representing a depreciation hit of RM7,521. The Saga would trade in at around RM27,917, shedding RM11,073. That leaves a depreciation gap of RM3,552 between the two across a three-year ownership cycle.

Factor in running costs as well, and the Bezza saves roughly RM798 in petrol and road tax over three years. Add that to its RM3,552 depreciation advantage, and the real difference in total cost of ownership after three years narrows to around RM2,750. In other words, over half of that RM4,990 premium paid upfront for the Bezza is recovered through fuel savings and superior residual value.

Stretch the ownership horizon to five years, and the Saga's depreciation widens further, making the Bezza's resale retention all the more compelling. However, an important caveat applies: residual value figures are drawn from historical used-car market trends. Your actual trade-in value will inevitably depend on vehicle condition, mileage, colour, and whether you sell to a used car dealer or a direct buyer.

Space and Equipment

In terms of dimensions, the Saga is larger all around. It measures 4,390 mm in length against the Bezza's 4,150 mm, 1,690 mm in width against 1,620 mm, and rides on a 2,465 mm wheelbase versus 2,455 mm. The Saga affords marginally more rear legroom than the Bezza, though the difference is modest.

Neither car provides a rear bench where full-grown adults can truly stretch out over long journeys; rear occupants will not feel cramped, but neither will they feel spoiled for room.

The boot is where the Bezza pulls off an unexpected trump card. At 508 litres, its cargo bay eclipses the Saga's 420 litres by a substantial 88 litres. In the national sedan segment, 508 litres is cavernous — capable of swallowing two large suitcases plus several backpacks with room to spare.

The Saga's 420 litres is perfectly adequate, but if you regularly haul bulky items, such as weekend IKEA runs or helping a friend move house, that extra 88 litres in the Bezza will save you an extra trip.

Equipment-wise, both cars keep things strictly utilitarian on these entry-level Standard and 1.3 X trims. The Saga Standard settles for a basic Bluetooth head unit with two speakers — no touchscreen infotainment, no reverse camera. The Bezza 1.3 X similarly skips the touchscreen and reverse camera.

On the safety front, both come with two airbags. At this entry-level national car price point, money is spent on mechanicals and cabin packaging; interior tech features are trimmed to the bare essentials.

How to Choose?

If your daily routine involves regular highway cruising and at least one or two outstation runs a month, the Saga's 120 PS and 150 Nm offer overtaking reserves you will appreciate every single day.

The entry price of RM38,990 provides genuine appeal to budget-conscious buyers, and the RM4,990 saved upfront can handily cover your first year of insurance and road tax. The Saga's marginally lower five-year servicing cost is another easily overlooked tick in its favour over the long haul.

If your usage is confined primarily to urban commuting, tackling stop-and-go traffic day in, day out, the Bezza's 4.5 L/100km fuel economy and RM70 annual road tax deliver tangible monthly savings.

If you plan to change cars within three to five years, the Bezza's stronger residual value will keep considerably more cash in your pocket when selling. And if cargo versatility matters, that 508-litre boot — a hefty 88 litres up on the Saga — will repeatedly prove its practical worth week after week.

Ultimately, that RM4,990 difference purchases two distinct types of certainty.

The Saga delivers upfront certainty: you spend less money today for a punchier engine and slightly lower maintenance costs. The Bezza offers certainty down the line: you stretch your initial budget in exchange for lower daily petrol bills and shallower depreciation.

Neither choice is wrong; you simply need to decide which certainty matters more to your bottom line.
