Malaysia recorded 74,259 new passenger car registrations in September 2026, down 3.9% from August's 77,276 but up 18.6% from the 62,587 registered in September 2025.
The monthly decline did not change the wider picture. Year-to-date (YTD) registrations reached 640,875 units, the highest total for the first nine months of any year and nearly 16,000 units ahead of the previous best, set in 2024.
Perodua remained the clear market leader with 27,838 registrations, although that was 5.4% below August. Proton followed with 18,149 units, down 9.9%, while Toyota held third with 10,606, up 0.7%.

The standout brand was Jetour. It moved into fifth place with 1,830 registrations, up 47.7% from August and its strongest month yet in Malaysia. The T2 contributed 1,248 units, including 342 of the new T2 i-DM hybrid.

At model level, the Proton Saga returned to the top with 8,671 registrations, ahead of the Perodua Bezza on 7,779 and the Perodua Axia on 7,678. The Saga has now topped the monthly table three times this year, although the Bezza continues to lead year to date (YTD).
Electrified vehicles remained a significant part of the market despite a weaker EV month. Battery electric registrations fell to 6,029, down 31.7% from August, while hybrids rose to 5,448, up 9.8%. Together, EVs and hybrids accounted for 15.5% of September registrations.
September was therefore a month of moderation rather than reversal. The monthly total slipped, but year-on-year (YoY) growth remained strong, the national market stayed on record pace, and new products continued to reshape the ranking tables.
