September 2026 Malaysia Car Sales: Proton leads September EV registrations despite a sharp monthly decline

The Proton eMas 5 remained Malaysia's most registered battery-electric model in September 2026 with 2,490 units, despite a 47.8% decline from August's 4,770. It still accounted for 41.3% of the EV market.

Total battery-electric registrations fell 31.7% to 6,029 from 8,833 in August. EVs represented 8.1% of the detailed car registration total, down from 11.4% a month earlier.

The eMas 5's reduction of 2,280 units accounted for 81.3% of the net monthly fall in EV registrations. That makes it the largest numerical contributor to the decline, although registration counts alone do not identify whether demand, supply or delivery scheduling caused the movement.

Proton's eMas 7 was second with 526 registrations. Combined with the eMas 5, Proton recorded 3,016 electric cars, equivalent to 50.0% of all September EV registrations.

The Tesla Model Y took third with 378, followed by the Zeekr 7X on 347. The Model Y fell 25.4% from August, while the 7X rose 12.7%. The Tesla Model 3 was fifth on 325, down 50.7%.

The iCaur 03 followed with 237 registrations, a 66.9% increase after its alternative maker and model spellings were combined. BYD's Atto 3 and Sealion entries recorded 208 and 154 respectively, followed by the Leapmotor C10 on 124 and BYD M6 on 90.

The Perodua QV-E narrowly missed the top 10 with 86 registrations, ahead of the Xpeng G6 on 85.
