Tesla introduces Emergency Drive Away feature, allowing drivers to escape while plugged in

Normally, an electric vehicle (EV) cannot be driven away while a charging cable is connected, even if the driver attempts to shift into Drive. It's a safety feature designed to prevent damage to the vehicle and charging equipment. But what happens if the driver needs to escape an armed robbery or shooting?

Shooting incident raises safety concerns

The issue came into focus following a shooting near a Tesla Supercharger at an In-N-Out Burger restaurant in Idaho, US, on 1 August 2026.

According to the account, a Tesla Model Y owner was sitting inside the vehicle while charging when a gunman suddenly opened fire.

With the charging connector still attached, the Model Y could not be shifted into Drive, preventing the driver from immediately escaping in the vehicle. The incident reportedly ended tragically.

The case sparked debate among EV owners over whether a safety feature intended to prevent accidents could become a serious disadvantage in a life-threatening emergency.

Emergency Drive Away introduced

In October 2026, Tesla reportedly introduced a new feature called Emergency Drive Away in the US through over-the-air software update 2026.38.3.

The feature is intended for extreme situations, such as an active shooting, armed robbery or other immediate threats to personal safety.

Rather than having to leave the vehicle to disconnect the charging cable, the driver can attempt to engage Drive and move away from the charging station with the connector still attached.

However, this emergency manoeuvre comes with a significant risk of damage.

Driving away while plugged in could tear the charging connector from the vehicle, damaging both the charging port and the Supercharger equipment. There is also a risk of coolant leakage.

The resulting repair and replacement costs could reportedly run into tens of thousands of US dollars, potentially equivalent to tens or even hundreds of thousands of ringgit.

The feature is therefore intended only for situations where escaping an immediate threat to life takes priority over protecting the vehicle or charging equipment.

A software alternative

The idea of allowing EV drivers to escape while charging is not entirely new.

Third-party companies such as EVject have previously developed breakaway charging adapters designed to disconnect under force, allowing a vehicle to drive away in an emergency.

Tesla's reported Emergency Drive Away feature takes a different approach by enabling an emergency escape through the vehicle's software, without requiring a separate adapter.

While the potential damage could be costly, the idea is to give drivers another option when remaining at a charging station could put their lives at risk.
