Why EVs feel so much more responsive than petrol cars?

Try pressing the accelerator in a conventional petrol car and a pure electric vehicle at the same time, and you will notice one obvious difference: an EV delivers its power almost instantly, while a petrol car takes a brief moment to respond.

That difference is not necessarily because an EV has more horsepower. It comes down to the fundamental differences between an electric motor and an internal-combustion engine, as well as the way their power is sent to the wheels.

Electric motors vs combustion engines

Petrol car: An internal-combustion engine produces power by burning petrol inside the cylinders. The resulting expansion pushes the pistons up and down, with the crankshaft then converting that movement into rotation.

The process involves several physical steps before the engine can deliver more power. The pistons need to accelerate, while turbocharged engines may also need to wait for exhaust gases to build boost, creating turbo lag.

EV: An electric motor works very differently. When current flows through the stator windings, it creates a rotating magnetic field that immediately drives the rotor.

The conversion from electrical energy to mechanical motion is much more direct, without the combustion process and complex series of moving parts found in an internal-combustion engine.

Torque: Instant response vs rising revs

Petrol car: An engine's torque output varies with engine speed. At very low revs, torque is usually lower, and the engine needs to build revs — often into the thousands — before reaching its peak torque.

EV: An electric motor can produce its maximum torque from zero rpm. Once you press the accelerator, the motor can deliver that torque almost immediately, without waiting for engine speed to build.

This is one of the main reasons an EV can feel so responsive from a standstill.

Single-speed reduction gear vs multi-speed gearbox

Petrol car: An internal-combustion engine has a relatively limited useful rev range, typically around 1,000 to 6,000rpm in normal driving. To provide both strong acceleration from a standstill and sufficient speed at the top end, it needs a gearbox to change the ratio between the engine and wheels.

Whether it is a 6-speed automatic, 8-speed automatic or dual-clutch transmission, the gearbox has to select a different ratio when the driving conditions change.

When you press the accelerator hard, the transmission may need to downshift and re-engage the appropriate gear ratio before sending the engine's power back to the wheels. This can introduce a brief interruption or delay in power delivery.

EV: Electric motors can operate across a much wider rev range, often at more than 10,000rpm, so most pure EVs use a single-speed reduction gear rather than a conventional multi-speed gearbox.

There is no gear change interrupting the power delivery. The motor simply responds to the accelerator input and adjusts its output accordingly.

The takeaway

Put simply, a petrol car has to coordinate combustion, engine speed, turbocharging where applicable and gear changes before it can deliver more power to the wheels.

An EV has far fewer steps between pressing the accelerator and generating drive torque at the wheels.

That is why an EV can feel almost like switching on a light: press the accelerator and the response is immediate.

It is this direct, predictable response that gives many EVs their distinctive feeling of being quick off the line and easy to control with the accelerator.
