This tiny BYD Dolphin G is Euro-bound and offers up to 1,000 km

BYD has revealed the Dolphin G, a plug-in hybrid hatchback positioned as the brand’s first model developed from the ground up for markets outside China, including Europe. The new car matters because it marks a shift in BYD’s export strategy from locally adapted products to a vehicle designed with broader international demand in mind.

Unlike many BYD models that are sold in different forms depending on the market, the Dolphin G is being prepared as a more unified global product. That is significant for a brand that has expanded quickly overseas but has so far relied on different line-ups across regions.

The Dolphin G is aimed at Europe’s B-segment, which covers compact hatchbacks and superminis. That places it in a crowded but important part of the market, where buyers often look for an affordable mix of efficiency, everyday usability and low running costs.

BYD has chosen a plug-in hybrid setup rather than a pure battery-electric powertrain. The move appears aimed at markets where EV adoption has slowed and where charging infrastructure still remains uneven, making hybrid electrification a more practical sales pitch.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor rated at 195 horsepower. BYD says the system gives the car a combined range of about 1,000 km, or 621 miles, which would place it among the longer-range plug-in hybrids in this class.

The range figure is the headline technical point of the Dolphin G, as it directly addresses range anxiety without depending entirely on public charging. For buyers considering a compact car in markets where charging access is still developing, that combination could be more important than pure EV performance figures.

Pricing is expected to start at roughly USD 25,000 (~RM 102k) to USD 30,000 (~RM 122k), which works out to about RM 118k to RM 142k based on current exchange rates. If BYD holds that positioning, the Dolphin G would enter the market with a relatively accessible price for a global plug-in hybrid.

The timing is also relevant because Europe’s traditional compact-car space has been under pressure. Several familiar nameplates have disappeared or faded, while newer cars have grown larger and more expensive than the segment used to be.

That trend has created an opening for vehicles that are smaller, more efficient and less costly to own. BYD appears to be targeting exactly that gap with the Dolphin G, using plug-in hybrid technology as a bridge between conventional ownership habits and electrified driving.

If launched as planned, the Dolphin G would represent more than just another BYD model line. It would be the company’s first serious attempt at a truly global vehicle strategy, with Europe as the clearest test market.
