BYD has officially released the first official images of its new large electric flagship SUV — the BYD Tang 8 Series. As a major flagship model independently developed by BYD, the new SUV features the brand's latest Dragon Face design language, a spacious cabin layout, and second-generation Blade Battery technology. Together with the recently introduced full-size SUV Tang 9 Series, it forms BYD's new dual-flagship SUV lineup.
For Malaysian EV enthusiasts and potential buyers following the latest developments in the new energy vehicle market, the key questions are: what are the major highlights of this premium "large five-seat flagship SUV", and does it have the potential to enter Malaysia and other right-hand-drive markets in Southeast Asia?
Based on the official images and available regulatory filings, the BYD Tang 8 Series continues to evolve the brand’s latest family design language. The front fascia features a highly recognisable full-width LED light strip, complemented by bold air intakes on both sides. Finished in the elegant Qianshan Green dual-tone colour scheme, the SUV delivers a premium presence comparable to European luxury SUVs.
From the side profile, the Tang 8 Series adopts semi-hidden door handles, a floating roof design, and offers large 20-inch and 21-inch alloy wheels.
In terms of dimensions, the Tang 8 Series measures 5,045 mm in length, 1,980 mm in width, and 1,760 mm in height, with a wheelbase stretching 2,950 mm.
Unlike the Tang 9 Series, which focuses on business users and large families with its full-size seven-seat layout, the Tang 8 Series is positioned as a luxurious large five-seater SUV (with a seven-seat option also available). It aims to attract premium family buyers by offering exceptional rear legroom and generous boot capacity, making it ideal for long-distance travel and a higher-quality lifestyle.
Beyond its commanding exterior, the Tang 8 Series’ biggest highlights lie in its upgraded electric powertrain and chassis technology:
Powerful Performance
The new SUV is equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous motor producing up to 300 kW (approximately 402 hp), with a top speed of 250 km/h. Its performance rivals many traditional luxury SUVs powered by V6 or V8 engines.
Second-Generation Blade Battery and Ultra-Fast Charging
The Tang 8 Series features BYD’s latest second-generation Blade Battery, offering a CLTC pure electric range of up to 850 km. With high-voltage fast-charging technology, the SUV is expected to deliver extremely efficient energy replenishment — adding practical driving range within just a few minutes and reaching near-full charge in around nine minutes. This could significantly reduce range anxiety during long-distance journeys.
Smart Driving and Chassis Technology
The new model is expected to come standard with BYD’s advanced “God’s Eye B” intelligent driving assistance system, covering more than 300 complex parking scenarios. It is also expected to feature the DiSus-A intelligent body control system with dual-chamber air suspension and intelligent road preview technology, helping filter out road imperfections and deliver a more refined ride experience.
BYD has yet to announce official pricing for the Tang 8 Series, but the model is expected to debut in China during the second half of 2026.
For the Malaysian market, BYD has already built a strong presence through models such as the Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal, and Sealion 7. With the brand continuing to expand its after-sales network and introduce more right-hand-drive (RHD) models, a premium D/E-segment flagship SUV like the Tang 8 Series (known as the Sealion 8 / Atto 8 in some overseas markets) could have strong potential for Malaysia.
If introduced locally, the SUV is expected to sit within the RM 200,000 to RM 300,000 price range, positioning it against models such as the Mazda CX-80, Volvo XC60/XC90, while potentially attracting existing Mercedes-Benz and BMW owners considering a transition to electric mobility.
