A Buying Guide to the Volvo ES90 Electric Crossover

On 22 January 2026, Volvo Car Malaysia officially launched the brand's first all-electric sedan, the ES90. This is not a traditional three-box sedan; Volvo bills it as a "crossover sedan" that blends fastback and SUV elements. What exactly is it, and does it justify its RM339,888 price tag?

Pricing

The Volvo ES90 is offered in a single variant in Malaysia – the Ultra Single Motor Extended Range, priced at RM339,888 (on-the-road, without insurance), with an annual road tax of RM395.

What makes this pricing particularly significant is its locally assembled (CKD) status.

Right from launch, the ES90 is assembled locally at Volvo's Shah Alam plant. This differs from Volvo's other flagship electric SUV, the EX90, which first arrived as a fully imported (CBU) model before transitioning to CKD assembly.

This CKD status is crucial for the ES90. Following the end of the tax exemption period for CBU EVs on 31 December 2025, all fully imported electric cars are now slapped with a 30% import duty. Because the ES90 is CKD from day one, it successfully bypasses this 30% tariff.

For comparison, the BMW i5 eDrive40, another CKD electric executive sedan, starts from RM368,800. This makes the ES90 nearly RM30,000 cheaper. Meanwhile, the fully imported (CBU) Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+ starts at a much higher RM379,888. The price advantage of the ES90 is clear as day.

Furthermore, the first 100 "early bird" buyers who book by 31 March 2026 will enjoy a 2% rebate (around RM6,800), while corporate buyers are eligible for an 8% fleet discount. Each purchase is backed by a five-year, unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty, an eight-year/160,000 km battery warranty, and a five-year digital services package.

What exactly is this car? – Not just an electric S90

Going by the name, the ES90 is easily perceived as the all-electric successor to the S90. However, Volvo's positioning goes much deeper.

This is by no means a traditional three-box sedan.

Volvo highlights that the ES90 is a crossover sedan blending fastback and SUV elements. Specifically:

Fastback styling: The ES90 features a single-piece tailgate and rear windscreen that opens upwards. This effectively makes it a hatchback rather than a conventional three-box sedan.

SUV-like ground clearance: The ES90 rides on a ground clearance of 181mm. In comparison, most conventional sedans in this segment sit at around 140mm. This extra height allows for easier ingress and egress, along with a commanding view of the road ahead – key reasons why buyers opt for SUVs over sedans.

The ES90 attempts to strike a balance between the dynamic handling of a sedan and the utility of an SUV. It is essentially a high-riding, long-wheelbase electric fastback.

Dimensions and Space

Built on Volvo's second-generation SPA2 platform, the ES90 shares its underpinnings with the brand's flagship electric SUV, the EX90.

It measures 5,000mm × 1,942mm × 1,547mm (Length × Width × Height), with a generous 3,102mm wheelbase.

For comparison:

Compared to the BMW i5, it is 60mm shorter, but 42mm wider, 32mm taller, and boasts a 107mm longer wheelbase.

The wheelbase is significantly longer than the S90's (3,102mm vs approx. 2,941mm), translating to far superior rear legroom.

It registers a drag coefficient of just 0.25 Cd, which is highly impressive for a vehicle of this size.

Four exterior colours are available: Vapour Grey, Crystal White, Denim Blue, and Onyx Black, all paired with a Charcoal interior.

Powertrain and Range

The Malaysian-spec ES90 comes in a rear-mounted single-motor, rear-wheel drive (RWD) configuration.

Maximum output: 333PS (245kW)

Peak torque: 480Nm

0-100km/h acceleration: 6.6 seconds

Top speed: 180km/h (electronically limited)

Juice is supplied by a 92kWh ternary lithium (NMC) battery with a usable capacity of 88kWh. This enables a WLTP-rated range of up to 651 km. Official average power consumption is rated at 15.9 kWh/100km.

In terms of pure range, the ES90 comfortably edges out the BMW i5 (627km WLTP).

Charging

Charging capability is another major selling point. The ES90 is Volvo's first production model to feature an 800V high-voltage electrical architecture.

For DC fast charging, the ES90 needs just 22 minutes to juice up from a 10% to 80% state of charge (SoC).

For AC charging, the onboard charger supports up to 11kW, requiring about 10 hours for a full charge. A standard 7.4kW home wallbox will take roughly 15 hours.

Practicality: Boot and Frunk Space

The fastback tailgate design ensures excellent loading convenience.

Boot space is rated at 424 litres, which expands to 733 litres or 904 litres with the 40/20/40 split rear seats folded down. The variance in figures likely stems from different measurement standards.

Under the hood, there is a front trunk (frunk) offering 22 litres or 27 litres of storage, which houses the charging cables by default.

Equipment

The standard kit list for the ES90 Ultra is extensive, making it a highly specified machine:

Cabin and Technology:

9-inch digital instrument cluster + 14.5-inch portrait touchscreen infotainment system

Head-Up Display (HUD)

Infotainment system developed based on Android Automotive OS with built-in Google services, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon cockpit platform, supporting over-the-air (OTA) software updates

Panoramic glass roof (with electrochromic dimming functionality)

Four-zone climate control

Power-adjustable front and rear seats

Audio:

25-speaker, 1,610W Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity sound system

Supports Dolby Atmos surround sound

Listening modes developed in collaboration with Abbey Road Studios

Safety

Safety remains central to Volvo's brand DNA, and the ES90 is no exception.

Nine airbags throughout the vehicle

Nvidia Drive AGX Orin central processing platform

Pilot Assist Level 2 semi-autonomous driving system: integrating Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centering Assist, and Curve Speed Assist

Oncoming Lane Mitigation with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian/cyclist/e-scooter avoidance steering assist

Lane Keeping Aid, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with steer assist

Rear Collision Warning and Mitigation, Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) with auto brake

Driver understanding system (driver monitoring), Door Open Warning, Rear Seat Reminder

360-degree surround view camera and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Who is this car for?

The positioning of the ES90 is clear-cut: it is not a performance-focused electric sedan, but a refined, all-electric cruiser tailored for the premium executive market.

If you meet the following conditions, the ES90 is worth serious consideration:

You want a premium electric sedan in the RM340,000 price range – at this price, the ES90 undercuts the BMW i5 by nearly RM30,000 and the Mercedes-Benz EQE by RM40,000, offering a major pricing edge.

You prioritize range – its 651km WLTP range leads its class at this price point, easily handling a one-way trip from KL to Penang (approx. 350km) with only a quick top-up needed for the return journey.

You hope for lower ownership costs – its CKD status ensures more manageable parts and maintenance costs, while the 8-year/160,000 km battery warranty provides absolute peace of mind.

You dislike the low-slung seating of traditional sedans – the ES90's 181mm ground clearance and raised seating position make getting in and out effortless while providing a commanding view.

You demand top-tier audio – the 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins setup with Dolby Atmos is virtually unmatched in this segment.

However, if you want high-performance or AWD – the ES90 is currently RWD-only. Its 0-100km/h time of 6.6 seconds is respectable for an executive sedan, but those wanting dual-motor performance or all-wheel drive will have to wait for the Twin Motor variant (already available overseas).

Conclusion

The Volvo ES90 is a hard car to pigeonhole. It blends the sleek profile of a sedan, the practicality of a fastback tailgate, the elevated ride height of an SUV, and the cabin refinement and safety tech of a premium executive vehicle.

Priced at RM339,888, and leveraging on CKD tax incentives, it holds a clear upper hand against rivals like the BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE. With a 651km range, 800V charging, a tech-heavy cabin, and top-tier safety specs, the ES90 is not just Volvo's first electric sedan, but a highly compelling alternative in the Malaysian premium EV space.
