Attention all Malaysian car enthusiasts! The luxury SUV segment is set to welcome an exciting new contender.
Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the all-new third-generation GLA, its entry-level SUV that continues to play a key role in the brand's global lineup.

As an important strategic model, the new Mercedes-Benz GLA introduces major upgrades in design and technology. For the first time, it is built on the brand's electric-first MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture) platform, offering both battery electric and 48V mild-hybrid powertrains.
For local buyers who are considering a premium SUV, the all-new GLA, expected to arrive as a 2028 model year vehicle, is certainly one to add to your shortlist.
As a premium compact SUV popular among many Malaysian families and urban professionals, the previous-generation GLA was sometimes criticised for its limited rear-seat space.
Mercedes-Benz has addressed this weakness with the all-new third-generation GLA, which grows significantly in size and offers a more spacious cabin.

The new GLA measures:
The longer wheelbase and increased overall length translate into a noticeably roomier interior, especially for rear-seat passengers.

Mercedes-Benz says rear legroom has increased by up to 38 mm, while additional headroom further improves passenger comfort, making the cabin feel less cramped on longer journeys.

In addition, the electric GLA offers 410 litres of boot space, which expands to 1,400 litres with the rear seats folded down.

There is also a 107-litre front trunk (frunk), adding extra storage space that is typically found in larger SUVs. This makes the GLA a more versatile choice for Malaysian drivers, whether for weekend balik kampung trips or longer road journeys.

To balance the shift towards electrification with the preferences of traditional petrol vehicle owners, the all-new GLA introduces a flexible and efficient powertrain strategy.
Pure Electric (EV)
Built on an 800V electrical architecture, the EV variant is available in several power configurations.
The GLA 250+ delivers 200 kW, while the range-topping GLA 350 4MATIC produces 260 kW, enabling a 0–100 km/h sprint in just 5.3 seconds.
Powering the EV models is an 85.0 kWh NMC battery, offering a range of up to 657 km under the WLTP cycle.
The electric GLA also supports 320 kW DC fast charging. A 10-minute charging can add around 270 km of range, making long-distance travel more convenient.

Mild-Hybrid (MHEV)
For drivers who aren't quite ready to go fully electric or frequently travel long distances, Mercedes-Benz has developed an all-new 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system.
The highlight of this powertrain is the integration of a 22kW electric motor into the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (8F-eDCT). The system allows the vehicle to drive on electric power in stop-and-go city traffic while improving efficiency through energy recovery.

The all-new GLA adopts Mercedes-Benz's latest design language, while introducing distinct styling differences between the electric and hybrid variants.
The electric GLA gets a closed-off front grille with an illuminated surround. Buyers can also opt for a unique grille design featuring up to 608 illuminated Mercedes three-pointed stars, creating a striking visual effect.

Electric GLA
The mild-hybrid GLA, meanwhile, retains a more traditional three-dimensional grille featuring the iconic Mercedes star pattern, preserving the elegant character expected of a luxury petrol-powered SUV.

Hybrid GLA
Both versions are equipped with newly designed teardrop headlights, pop-out door handles and a sportier coupe-inspired roofline.
The sleeker design not only enhances the GLA's visual appeal but also improves aerodynamic efficiency, giving it a more muscular and futuristic appearance compared with the previous generation.
Customers can further personalise the vehicle with optional AMG Line or Night Edition packages to enhance its sporty character.

Inside, the dashboard is dominated by a sweeping glass panel housing a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.5-inch central touchscreen as standard.
Higher-spec models can also be equipped with an additional front passenger screen, creating a seamless "triple-screen" setup.

The infotainment system is powered by the latest MBUX platform, featuring an AI-based virtual assistant that enables more natural and intuitive voice interactions.

One of the standout features is the optional "Sky Control" panoramic sunroof. Made up of seven independent sections, it allows occupants to adjust the transparency within milliseconds.

At night, the glass roof can display 172 illuminated "stars". Paired with the 64-colour ambient lighting and a 16-speaker Burmester 3D surround sound system with Dolby Atmos, it creates a truly immersive in-cabin experience.

The debut of the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA marks another major step forward for Mercedes-Benz in the premium compact SUV segment.

Whether it's the all-electric variant with its impressive driving range and ultra-fast charging capabilities, or the 48V mild-hybrid version that balances performance with fuel efficiency, the new GLA looks set to be a strong contender in its class.
According to Mercedes-Benz's global rollout plan, the new GLA is scheduled to arrive in international markets from mid-2027 as a 2028 model-year vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia's official website has already listed the 2028 Mercedes-Benz GLA as "Available soon".
