Xiaomi SU7 tops 500,000 deliveries – When will Xiaomi come to Malaysia?

On 17 August, Xiaomi announced that cumulative deliveries of the Xiaomi SU7 had surpassed 500,000 units.

The milestone comes around 28.5 months after the SU7 first went on sale in March 2024, marking a remarkably rapid start for Xiaomi's entry into the car industry.

The latest milestone is also drawing attention in Malaysia, where speculation over a possible Xiaomi Auto launch has been building.

Recently, a Gulf Blue Xiaomi SU7 was spotted on social media carrying a Chinese Anhui "皖J" registration plate. The sighting has inevitably raised the question among Malaysian enthusiasts: could the SU7 be heading here next?

There are already some signs that Xiaomi may be looking more seriously at the Malaysian market. Xiaomi Technology has advertised automotive-related positions locally, including a Government Relations Manager (Automotive).

The position calls for knowledge of Malaysia's automotive regulations and experience dealing with agencies including MIDA, MITI, MARii, Customs, and JPJ.

It also references both CBU (completely built-up) imports and CKD (completely knocked-down) operations, suggesting that Xiaomi may be assessing more than just a straightforward vehicle launch.

Xiaomi's range in China is also becoming more established. Alongside the SU7 sedan, the company now has the YU7 SUV, giving it a broader product portfolio as it expands its presence in the EV market.

With Chinese EV brands gaining increasing acceptance among Malaysian buyers, a local launch could put Xiaomi in direct competition with a growing field of established Chinese marques.

Whether Xiaomi eventually brings the SU7 to Malaysia — and whether it could eventually move towards local assembly — remains to be seen. For now, the SU7's appearance on Malaysian roads and Xiaomi's reported recruitment activity are enough to keep the speculation going.
