2027 Mitsubishi Pajero: 2 Sept debut, ladder-frame returns, 2.4L twin-turbo diesel, PHEV possible

Mitsubishi has scheduled the global unveiling of the 2027 Mitsubishi Pajero for 2 September 2026, confirming earlier leaks and signalling a rapid path to market for Australia where the SUV is due in the fourth quarter of 2026. The reborn Pajero is notable for a major architectural shift and a clear focus on ladder‑frame durability.

The new Pajero revives the nameplate on a successor that moves away from the old Pajero's unibody layout. Mitsubishi has reworked the Pajero Sport's replacement on a heavy‑duty ladder frame derived from the Triton pick-up truck, a change that aligns the model more closely with traditional body‑on‑frame off‑roaders.

Australian government documentation and Mitsubishi's confirmation indicate the 2027 Pajero will be offered in four specifications at launch: GLX, GLS, Exceed and GSR. Keep in mind that these are specific for the Australian-market models; other markets, like ours, would have different variant names.

Underpinnings and likely powertrain choices point to significant parts sharing with the Triton. Industry reporting expects a version of the Triton's 2.4‑litre twin‑turbo four‑cylinder diesel to be the primary engine for the Pajero. Drive reckons that the transmission options could include an eight‑speed automatic carried over from the outgoing Pajero Sport rather than the Triton's six‑speed unit.

Exterior spy images show a distinct design compared with the Triton. Visible highlights include a full‑width H‑shaped LED daytime‑running lamp signature, variant‑specific grille treatments and a top‑mounted tailgate. Mitsubishi says the Pajero will feature model‑specific development for both cabin and front/rear suspension relative to the Triton.

For buyers watching the Pajero name return, the key changes to note are the ladder‑frame architecture, expected 2.4L twin‑turbo diesel option, the four announced grades and the inclusion of digital off‑road instrumentation derived from the model's heritage.
