2026 GWM Wey G9 HEV vs PHEV in Malaysia: What does the extra RM 20,000 get you?

The 2026 GWM Wey G9 now comes with two hybrid powertrain options in Malaysia. Joining the existing Hi4 PHEV is the new Hi4 HEV, giving buyers a version that doesn’t require external charging.

Both are locally assembled (CKD) at EP Manufacturing Berhad’s (EPMB) plant in Melaka, with much of the same equipment. But there are differences beyond the charging port, including performance, weight and a refrigerator that’s exclusive to the PHEV.

Overview

Prices for the two GWM Wey G9 variants are as follows:

Variant Price
G9 Hi4 HEV RM 249,800
G9 Hi4 PHEV RM 269,800

Prices are on-the-road, without insurance, for Peninsular Malaysia, excluding Langkawi.

The PHEV commands a RM 20,000 premium. For that, buyers get a substantially larger battery, the ability to charge externally and quicker acceleration, alongside a few additional features.

GWM’s current offer also lists financing at 0.08%, RM 5,000 trade-in support, five years of free maintenance covering parts and labour, and five years of vehicle telematics service. A complimentary wallbox home charger is offered with the PHEV.

Powertrain

Both variants use GWM’s Hybrid Intelligent 4WD system, or Hi4, pairing a petrol engine with front and rear electric motors through a four-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT).

The engines and batteries are where the two take different approaches.

Specification G9 Hi4 HEV G9 Hi4 PHEV
Petrol engine 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder
Engine output 175 kW (238 PS) 110 kW (150 PS)
Engine torque 385 Nm 243 Nm
Combined output 263 kW (358 PS) 325 kW (442 PS)
Combined torque 782 Nm 642 Nm
Front motor output 80 kW, 170 Nm 80 kW, 170 Nm
Rear motor output 135 kW, 232 Nm 135 kW, 232 Nm
Battery capacity 1.67 kWh 44.2 kWh
Transmission Four-speed DHT Four-speed DHT
Driven wheels All-wheel drive All-wheel drive
0–100 km/h 7.5 seconds 5.7 seconds
Top speed 190 km/h 190 km/h

The HEV has the larger petrol engine and a higher quoted combined torque figure. However, the PHEV produces 84 PS more and completes the century sprint 1.8 seconds sooner.

That’s despite the PHEV weighing 2,803 kg, some 253 kg more than the 2,550 kg HEV. The higher torque figure alone doesn’t make the HEV the quicker car.

Charging

The HEV replenishes its small battery through the hybrid system and regenerative braking. There’s no need to plug it in.

The PHEV supports both AC and DC charging:

Charging specification G9 Hi4 PHEV
Maximum AC charging power 6.6 kW
Quoted AC charging time, 15–100% 6.5 hours
Maximum DC charging power 60 kW
Quoted DC charging time, 30–80% 26 minutes
Vehicle-to-load (V2L) output 3.3 kW

Its vehicle-to-load (V2L) function also allows the PHEV to supply power to external appliances. The HEV does not offer this feature.

Exterior and dimensions

There’s no size advantage to choosing either variant. Both measure 5,050 mm long, 1,985 mm wide and 1,900 mm tall, with a 3,085 mm wheelbase.

Both also get 18-inch alloy wheels with 245/50 R18 tyres, LED headlights, a front electric sunroof, rear electric panoramic sunroof and a powered tailgate.

Exterior colours are shared, comprising Aurora White, Nebula Black and Wisdom Grey.

The easiest method to differentiate the two is the emblem on the tailgate, as well as the lack of the charging port on the driver side of the HEV variant.

Interior and equipment

The HEV retains most of the PHEV’s cabin equipment, including the seven-seat, 2+2+3 layout.

Shared features include:

  • Nappa leather upholstery, with leatherette on the third row
  • Second-row zero-gravity seats with ventilation and 10-point massage
  • Sliding tracks for the second and third rows
  • Luggage capacity ranging from 233 to 1,725 litres
  • 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and head-up display
  • 14.6-inch infotainment display
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 21-speaker audio system
  • 50 W wireless charger
  • Tri-zone automatic climate control
  • Active noise cancellation
  • Digital rear-view mirror

The clearest cabin omission on the HEV is the 12.5-litre refrigerator. The PHEV gets the dual-opening unit with cooling and heating functions covering 0°C to 50°C.

The PHEV also offers an exclusive brown interior with a grey roof. A black interior with a grey roof is available on both variants.

Safety

Safety equipment are identical for both variants, including six airbags, a 360-degree camera with transparent chassis view and fully automated integrated parking.

Both also receive adaptive cruise control, Traffic Jam Assist, autonomous emergency braking with intersection support, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert with braking.

Choosing the HEV therefore doesn’t mean giving up driver assistance features.

Warranty & Aftersales

Both the HEV and PHEV variants come with a six-year, unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty.

The high-voltage battery, electric drive motor and electric motor control unit are covered for eight years or 180,000 km, subject to terms and conditions.

Which should you buy?

The HEV is the stronger value choice for buyers who don’t have convenient charging access. It costs RM 20,000 less and retains the second-row comfort features, cabin technology and safety equipment that make the G9 appealing as a family or chauffeur-driven MPV.

The PHEV makes more sense if you can charge regularly and want to use its electric driving capability. The extra money also buys quicker acceleration, vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality and the refrigerator.

For buyers who intend to refuel and carry on as usual, the HEV is the sensible pick. Regular access to charging gives the PHEV a much stronger case.
