Mazda's latest-generation CX-5 is getting a smarter voice assistant. From 27 October 2026, the SUV's Google built-in infotainment system supports Google Gemini, allowing drivers to control key functions and handle everyday requests through more natural conversations rather than memorised voice commands.
The update is available free through Google Play for the new CX-5 in the US, Canada, Europe and Japan.

Talk naturally instead of memorising commands
With Gemini, drivers can speak more naturally when adjusting the cabin temperature, finding a destination or choosing entertainment. Rather than sticking to specific phrases, they can make requests in the same way they would in everyday conversation.
The idea is to make in-car technology easier to use while helping drivers keep their attention on the road.
Google Maps gets more conversational
Gemini also makes it easier to search for places and plan journeys through Google Maps. Alongside setting destinations, checking traffic and getting estimated arrival times, drivers can make more specific requests.
For example, they could ask for a highly rated café with outdoor seating along their route, making it easier to find a suitable stop without having to search manually.
Control the cabin and personalise your entertainment
Gemini can handle everyday comfort requests, too. If the cabin feels cold and the windows begin to mist up, drivers can simply explain the situation and ask the assistant to adjust the climate controls and activate the demister.
For entertainment, Gemini can recommend and play music to suit a driver's mood or the journey. It can also provide information about the track currently playing or resume an audiobook.
Gemini Live brings open-ended conversations into the car
The update also introduces Gemini Live in beta, allowing drivers to have more free-flowing conversations with the assistant.
Beyond routine vehicle functions, it can be used to brainstorm ideas, plan a family trip or practise for a work conversation while on the move.
By bringing Gemini into the CX-5, Mazda is aiming to make voice interaction feel less like operating a machine and more like having a natural conversation – while keeping everyday tasks simpler for the driver.
