Yangwang U9 Xtreme crashed during high speed test, passenger cell remained intact

The Yangwang U9 Xtreme, BYD's nearly 3,000 hp electric hypercar, was involved in a serious crash during high-speed testing in China. Despite extensive damage to the vehicle, its passenger compartment reportedly remained intact, with the driver said to have escaped without injury.

Footage of the accident circulated on Chinese social media on November 2, 2026, showing the U9 Xtreme losing control at high speed before striking a trackside barrier. The impact caused extensive damage, with reports indicating that the rear axle assembly was completely torn away from the vehicle.

What's particularly remarkable is the condition of the passenger cell following the crash. Although much of the car's exterior and mechanical components were destroyed, the central occupant compartment appeared to retain its basic structure. Reports also indicate that the driver was able to exit the wreckage without assistance.

The exact speed at the moment of impact has not been independently confirmed, although some Chinese reports have suggested the car was travelling at close to 400 km/h. The cause of the accident and the date on which it occurred have also not been officially established.

The U9 Xtreme uses a carbon-fibre-intensive structure, with its central safety cell designed to protect the occupant while surrounding components absorb and manage impact forces. However, the footage alone cannot establish how the structure performed internally, and no detailed technical investigation of the crash has been published.

There were also no reports of a battery fire immediately following the impact, although this should not be taken as confirmation that the battery sustained no damage.

Nearly 3,000 hp, with a 496.22 km/h speed record

The Yangwang U9 Xtreme is currently one of the fastest production-based cars in the world, having recorded a top speed of 496.22 km/h at Germany's Automotive Testing Papenburg facility in September 2025.

It uses four electric motors producing a combined 2,220 kW, equivalent to approximately 3,019 PS, supported by a 1,200-volt electrical architecture and an 80-kWh high-performance Blade Battery.

Only 30 examples of the U9 Xtreme are planned for production.

Interestingly, footage of the crash has emerged just as Yangwang prepares for another high-speed record attempt in the United Arab Emirates.

U9 Exterme in better days

Yangwang executive Hu Xiaoqing recently confirmed that the company intends to conduct its next challenge in Abu Dhabi, using a specially assessed and secured public-road environment rather than a conventional proving ground.

The new attempt is expected to target a speed beyond the U9 Xtreme's existing 496.22 km/h result, potentially breaking the 500 km/h barrier.

For now, the crash serves as a reminder of the risks involved in extreme-speed development. While the passenger compartment's apparent survival is encouraging, further information will be needed to establish the circumstances of the accident and the effectiveness of the vehicle's safety systems.
