Chinese new energy giant BYD officially launched its first-ever all-electric microcar, the RACCO, in Japan on 28 July 2026. The RACCO is specifically tailored to overseas markets, particularly Japan's native Kei Car culture.
Its starting price before tax is 2,145,000 yen (approximately RM 63,000). For context, the petrol-powered Honda N-BOX starts at 1,768,000 yen (~RM 44,100) in Japan.

For those familiar with car culture, Kei cars are to Japan what the Myvi is to Malaysia. They are both the people's car.
Due to Japan's strict regulations on vehicle dimensions and engine displacement, Kei Cars have long dominated the Japanese market thanks to their exceptional space efficiency, low ownership costs and impressive fuel economy.
However, for decades, Japan's domestic Kei car market has been the exclusive playground of local giants like Honda (N-BOX), Nissan, and Daihatsu.

The BYD RACCO is not only the brand's first strategic model developed for overseas markets, but also a challenge to traditional Japanese kei car makers with a more affordable price tag, richer equipment and longer driving range.

According to BYD Japan's official website and launch event details, the RACCO's design and specifications are fully tailored to meet the daily needs of Japanese families.
Built within Japan's official K-car regulations, the vehicle measures 3,395 × 1,475 × 1,800 mm.

Power sliding doors: The rear features standard power sliding doors with a hands-free kick sensor. This makes it easy for elderly family members to get in and out, or for parents holding babies to load items.
Vibrant colour options: The car comes in six colors—Arctic White, Cosmic Black, Arctic Blue, Midnight Green, Jewel Red, and Cheese Yellow. The range-topping variant exclusively features the "Jewel Red" paint finish and premium synthetic leather seats.

Price: From 2,145,000 Yen (before tax)
Electric Range: 210 km to 320 km (WLTC cycle)
Key Features: Standard Level 2 ADAS, V2L (Vehicle-to-Load), heated seats & steering wheel
The RACCO is offered with two battery options.
Entry-level variant: 22.4 kWh battery, offering a WLTC-rated range of 210 km—more than sufficient for daily grocery runs, school runs, and short urban commutes.
Premium variant: Gets a larger 35.84 kWh battery, boosting range up to 320 km, which is ample for longer interstate trips. It supports DC fast charging at up to 50 kW.

Even more impressive is the "premium features as standard" philosophy. Every trim level comes standard with heated seats, a heated steering wheel, Level 2 ADAS, V2L (vehicle-to-load), and six airbags.
The cabin also features a 10.1-inch central touchscreen, a 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and an insulated cup holder.

While the RACCO is a right-hand-drive model built to Japan's tight K-car regulations, we are unlikely to see it arrive on our shores in this exact spec. Malaysia lacks Japan's tax exemptions for kei cars, and local buyers overwhelmingly prefer B-segment and larger sedans or SUVs.
However, this launch sends a signal: BYD's ability to tailor and engineer vehicles for unique global regulations is now incredible.
