Rumour: Toyota GR-GT Convertible variant reportedly in development, limited production planned

Toyota is reportedly developing an open-top variant of its upcoming GR-GT flagship sports car, according to a report by Japanese publication Magazine X. Tentatively referred to as the GR-GT Convertible, the model is said to be one of several derivatives being planned alongside the standard road car and the track-focused GR-GT3.

The report claims the removable-roof variant will retain the GR-GT's long-bonnet, cab-rearward proportions while offering an open-air driving experience. It remains unclear whether Toyota will opt for a manually removable roof panel, similar to a targa top, or a fully powered retractable roof, with the publication suggesting weight considerations may favour the former.

The GR-GT was first unveiled globally in December 2025 before making its public debut at the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon. Positioned as Toyota's new flagship performance model, it is expected to rival the Mercedes-AMG GT and serve as the basis for the company's future GT3 racing programme.

According to the report, the production model will feature an all-aluminium chassis — a first for Toyota — with a targeted kerb weight of under 1,750 kg. Dimensions are said to measure 4,820 mm in length, 2,000 mm in width and 1,195 mm in height.

Power is expected to come from a newly developed 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 paired with a hybrid system. The engine will drive a rear-mounted transaxle via a torque tube, with an integrated electric motor forming part of the drivetrain. Combined system output is rumoured to exceed 650 PS and 850 Nm, while gear changes will be handled by a newly developed eight-speed automatic transmission.

Besides the standard road-going model, Toyota is also said to be preparing several variants, including the competition-spec GR-GT3, the rumoured Convertible variant, as well as higher-performance tuned versions.

Production is reportedly expected to be limited to around 500 units, similar to the Lexus LFA. Pricing is said to be targeted below JPY 30 million (~RM 780k at current exchange rates), although no official figures have been confirmed.

Magazine X also claims the GR-GT will not be sold through Toyota's conventional dealership network. Instead, customers may have to purchase the vehicle directly from Toyota, with prospective buyers undergoing an application and interview process conducted by representatives from the GR Company. Although the sales process may be presented as a lottery, the report suggests allocations will ultimately be determined by Toyota to prioritise enthusiasts and owners who intend to drive the car rather than collectors or speculators.

If the report proves accurate, the GR-GT Convertible would expand Toyota's upcoming flagship sports car line-up beyond the coupe and GT3 race car, offering buyers a more exclusive open-air alternative while retaining the model's high-performance credentials.

Toyota has yet to officially confirm the existence of the GR-GT Convertible, and all specifications and production details remain speculative at this stage. Magazine X believes the model is unlikely to be unveiled before 2027.
