Rumour: Mazda CX-20 could debut in 2027 as CX-3 successor, Thailand production reportedly planned

Mazda is reportedly preparing an all-new compact SUV to replace the ageing CX-3, with the new model rumoured to adopt the CX-20 nameplate and make its debut in 2027.

According to reports from Thailand, the new crossover is being developed primarily for ASEAN markets and is expected to be manufactured in Thailand as part of Mazda's regional production strategy. The model is also tipped to become one of the company's key volume sellers in Southeast Asia.

Positioned below the CX-30, the purported CX-20 is expected to compete directly in the increasingly competitive B-segment SUV market against rivals such as the Toyota Yaris Cross, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona and Proton X50.

In terms of design, the CX-20 is rumoured to introduce an updated interpretation of Mazda's Kodo design language, featuring a wider front grille, slimmer LED headlights and a more coupe-inspired roofline. Early renderings also suggest vertically oriented daytime running lights similar to those seen on newer Mazda SUV models, although the final production design remains unconfirmed.

The cabin is expected to receive a significant upgrade over the current CX-3, with improved material quality, a more spacious interior and a redesigned infotainment system. While details remain limited, the new SUV is likely to feature the latest generation of Mazda's connected technologies and driver assistance systems.

Under the bonnet, the report suggests the CX-20 will be offered with electrified powertrains, with a 48V mild hybrid (MHEV) system expected to headline the range at launch. A full hybrid (HEV) variant is also said to be under consideration, depending on market requirements. Power is expected to come from either a 1.5-litre or 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with the hybrid system.

The reported powertrain strategy aligns with Mazda's previously announced investment in Thailand, where the company is developing the country into a production hub for next-generation compact electrified SUVs destined for both domestic and export markets. Industry analysts also expect the model to play an important role in Mazda's product offensive between 2025 and 2028.

While reports point towards a 2027 launch, Mazda has yet to officially confirm the CX-20 name or reveal any details about the replacement for the CX-3.
