Chery CEO Yin Tongyue apologizes over Chery Omoda 5 axle issue in Malaysia

The latest Chery Omoda 5 rear axle incident in Malaysia has drawn a public apology from the carmaker’s chairman and president, Yin Tongyue, as the company carries out a recall involving 8,878 vehicles.

For affected owners, the immediate concern is getting their vehicles inspected and rectified. For Chery, the incident has also put its commitment to Malaysian customers under scrutiny at the highest level.

Overseas growth must come with responsibility

Yin addressed that responsibility during the World Intelligent Connected Vehicles Conference on 21 October 2026, saying that building a business overseas requires lasting investment in the market and respect for local laws and business practices.

He cautioned against overconfidence and excessive self-promotion, warning that international expansion without adequate preparation could end in failure.

Turning to Malaysia, Yin acknowledged the vehicle quality issues and revealed that he had personally apologised to the country’s minister of investment, trade and industry earlier that day. He also said Chery had taken responsibility for its customers following the incident.

His remarks follow footage showing an Omoda 5 with a detached rear axle. JPJ subsequently announced a temporary suspension of the model’s Vehicle Type Approval (VTA), stopping new registrations pending the technical investigation.
