GWM's premium brand Wey has officially launched the G9 HEV luxury MPV in China on 26 October, where it is known as the Gaoshan 8 HEV.
The launch brings another hybrid option to Wey's luxury MPV range, with GWM offering both conventional hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains in China and Malaysia.

The idea is to give buyers a choice based on how they use their vehicles. An HEV does not need to be plugged in, while a PHEV offers the option of charging its battery externally.
It's an approach that may be familiar to Malaysian luxury MPV buyers, where the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire are sold side-by-side with different petrol and hybrid powertrain options.

Here's how the locally available Alphard and Vellfire variants compare:

Similarly, the Wey G9's two powertrain options allow buyers to choose between the convenience of a self-charging hybrid and the additional electric-driving capability of a plug-in hybrid.

Malaysian buyers already have access to both versions of the GWM Wey G9, with the HEV and PHEV models locally assembled (CKD).
The GWM Wey G9 Hi4 HEV is priced at RM 249,800 and is aimed at buyers who want hybrid fuel efficiency and all-wheel-drive performance without having to plug in.
The GWM Wey G9 Hi4 PHEV, meanwhile, costs RM 269,800, making it RM20,000 more expensive than the HEV.
Both versions come with a seven-seat cabin, zero-gravity first-class massage seats, a 21-speaker premium audio system and Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
For buyers considering a luxury MPV, the choice comes down partly to whether they have convenient access to charging and how much they expect to use the vehicle's electric-driving capability.

In China, the newly launched Wey G9 HEV is priced between RMB 265,800 and RMB 285,800. Limited-time promotional prices range from RMB 259,800 to RMB 279,800 (approximately RM 158k to RM 170k).

The China-spec Wey G9 HEV is fitted with the Coffee Pilot 3 driver assistance system, packing 27 high-precision sensors, a 192-line LiDAR, and an NVIDIA Drive Orin-Y chip boasting 200 TOPS of computing power, elevating its automated driving capabilities to new heights.
Powered by a 2.0T dedicated hybrid engine paired with a dual-motor AWD system, total system output stands at 322 kW (438 PS) and 782 N·m of torque. Century sprint (0-100 km/h) is completed in just 5.9 seconds, with an all-aluminium alloy suspension setup fitted as standard across the range.
By implementing this concurrent HEV and PHEV dual-track strategy, GWM not only showcases its technological depth in new-energy powertrains, but also cleverly replicates the proven multi-powertrain playbook exemplified by Toyota Alphard and Vellfire. This provides buyers with the flexibility to pick the luxury people-mover setup that fits their lifestyle best!
