The Proton eMas 5 emerged as Malaysia's best-selling electric vehicle in July 2026, recording 2,402 registrations and finishing more than four times ahead of the second-placed BYD Atto 3.

The eMas 5 accounted for approximately 34.6% of all 6,937 electric vehicles registered in Malaysia during the month, underlining its strong performance in the country's rapidly growing EV market.

The BYD Atto 3 ranked second with 531 units, followed closely by the Proton eMas 7 with 526 units.

The Tesla Model Y and Zeekr 7X completed the top five with 470 and 416 units respectively.

Proton takes two spots in EV top three

The July rankings gave Proton two models in the top three, with the eMas 5 and eMas 7 collectively registering 2,928 units.

This means the two Proton models accounted for approximately 42.2% of all EV registrations in Malaysia during July.

The eMas 5 alone recorded 1,871 more units than the BYD Atto 3, with its 2,402-unit tally more than four times the sales of the second-placed model.

The eMas 7, meanwhile, registered 526 units, just five units behind the BYD Atto 3.

BYD, Tesla and Zeekr round out the top five

BYD placed two models within the July EV top 10, with the Atto 3 leading the brand's performance at 531 units.

The BYD Sealion ranked sixth with 251 units, while the BYD Atto 2 recorded 212 units in eighth place.

Between them were the Tesla Model Y with 470 units and Zeekr 7X with 416 units.

Leapmotor's B10 took seventh place with 230 units, while Chery's iCaur 03 iWD and iCaur V23 completed the top 10 with 183 and 139 units respectively.

July EV registrations rise 11.6%

Malaysia recorded 6,937 EV registrations in July, up from 6,215 units in June.

This represents a month-on-month increase of approximately 11.6%, meaning EV registrations grew at a faster rate than the overall automotive market, which increased by 9.7% over the same period.

The strong performance of the eMas 5 was a major contributor to the increase, with the model alone accounting for more than one-third of all EV registrations during the month.

July 2026 EV rankings

Rank Model July 2026 Sales
1 Proton eMas 5 2,402
2 BYD Atto 3 531
3 Proton eMas 7 526
4 Tesla Model Y 470
5 Zeekr 7X 416
6 BYD Sealion 251
7 Leapmotor B10 230
8 BYD Atto 2 212
9 Chery iCaur 03 iWD 183
10 iCaur V23 139

With the eMas 5 now firmly established as the country's best-selling EV, July's figures mark a significant development in Malaysia's increasingly competitive electric vehicle market.

The model's ability to compete directly with established EV nameplates from BYD, Tesla and Zeekr also gives Proton a strong position as it continues to expand its presence in Malaysia's electrified vehicle segment.
