Next-gen Honda CR-V Hybrid reportedly fast-tracked for February 2027 production

Honda has cancelled three electric models that were due to be built in North America: the Honda 0 SUV, Honda 0 Saloon and Acura RSX EV.

The decision, announced in March 2026, came just months before two of the models were due to enter production. It means Honda will not have a new model launch until spring 2027, while the cancellations also contributed to the company's first annual loss in almost 70 years.

Honda's answer has been to bring forward the next-generation CR-V Hybrid.

According to Nikkei, production in North America will now start in February 2027 at Honda's Ontario plant in Canada, followed by production at its Indiana and Ohio plants a month later.

This will be a full model change rather than a facelift, bringing a new platform and Honda's next-generation hybrid system.

Why the CR-V?

The CR-V is Honda's best-selling model in the US, making it one of the most important vehicles in the company's line-up.

Its biggest rival, the Toyota RAV4, has moved fully into hybrid power in the US, with the petrol-only version dropped from the line-up.

The current sixth-generation CR-V only went on sale at the end of 2022, so a changeover in early 2027 would already fit Honda's usual six- to seven-year product cycle. This time, however, the launch has been brought forward.

The new hybrid system

Honda has set three main targets for the new system.

Fuel efficiency is expected to improve by more than 10%. Rather than relying on a larger battery or more powerful motor, Honda is widening the engine's efficient operating range and reducing energy losses within the hybrid system.

The more interesting figure is cost. Honda is targeting a more than 30% reduction, or more than 50% compared with its 2018 hybrid system.

Hybrid cars have traditionally cost more than petrol versions because of the extra hardware needed, including the battery, electric motors and power control unit. Lowering those costs would give Honda more room to narrow that gap.

The new platform will also be lighter. For AWD versions, Honda is developing a new electric four-wheel-drive system that uses two electric motors to drive the rear wheels directly, instead of a conventional driveshaft.

More than a CR-V

The platform will also be used by Acura for a new hybrid SUV, according to Nikkei.

Acura's RDX has shared development platforms with the CR-V in previous generations, with the RDX essentially serving as the more premium counterpart. The third-generation RDX ended production in May 2026, and the fourth-generation model is expected in the next few years.

Honda showed two next-generation hybrid prototypes in May: a fastback-style Honda sedan and a mid-sized Acura crossover. Both use Honda's new dual-motor hybrid system and are scheduled to debut in 2027.

The CR-V will be the first production model to use the system, followed by the Acura SUV.

A larger three-row hybrid SUV is also planned for 2029. Unlike the CR-V and RDX, it will use a V6 engine with a dual-motor hybrid system, giving it higher performance than the CR-V and RDX.

Malaysia is already going hybrid

Honda's shift towards hybrids is already visible in Malaysia.

In March 2026, Honda Malaysia revised the CR-V line-up, dropping the S and 1.5-litre turbo E variants and adding the 2.0-litre e:HEV E, priced at RM 178,200.

The e:HEV RS remains available at RM 195,900, leaving the CR-V with three variants, two of them hybrids.

The sales mix has changed quickly.

Hybrid versions accounted for around 20% of CR-V sales in 2024 and 2025. In the first seven months of 2026, the figure had climbed to 49.9%.

Almost one in two CR-V buyers was choosing the hybrid. That makes the move away from the petrol version a lot easier to understand.

Honda Malaysia's e:HEV system now covers five models: the City, City Hatchback, HR-V, Civic and CR-V. The company also plans to launch six new models in 2026 and expand its e:HEV line-up further.

If the next-generation CR-V comes to Malaysia as a hybrid-only model, local buyers should have little trouble adapting. Hybrid demand is already growing.

What's next?

Honda's EV pullback and renewed focus on hybrids are becoming increasingly visible across its product plans.

The next-generation CR-V is likely to be one of the most important parts of that shift. If Honda can cut the cost of its hybrid system while improving efficiency, the technology should become easier to offer across more models.

And in Malaysia, where almost half of CR-V buyers were already choosing e:HEV in the first seven months of 2026, Honda already has a market that is familiar with the idea.
