Upcoming BAIC SUVs in Malaysia: Arcfox T1 for city, BJ30 Hybrid for wilderness, both set for CKD

The saga of BAIC's entry into Malaysia has had more twists and turns than a TV drama. Talks began back in 2015, followed by the showcase of the EV200 and D20 in 2016, after which everything went quiet.

In 2023, an MoU was signed with EPMB, and in 2024, the X55 and BJ40 Plus were previewed. Then 2024 rolled into 2025, and 2025 into 2026. Now, there is finally a timeline,

The Arcfox T1 is slated for launch as early as late this year, while the BJ30 Hybrid is expected to arrive in Q1 2027, with both models being locally assembled (CKD) from day one.

To be clear, neither model has officially debuted in Malaysia yet. The pricing and timelines below are estimations based on details already released in Indonesia and the anticipated local CKD tax structure. Final figures remain subject to the official announcement by BAIC Malaysia.

Built for Different Arenas

The Arcfox T1 is a pure electric compact SUV measuring 4,337 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,572 mm in height, with a 2,770 mm wheelbase.

Powered by a front-mounted electric motor delivering 95 PS and 176 Nm, paired with a 42.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, it offers a WLTP range of 310 km.

In Indonesia, it is priced at IDR 393 million (around RM89,000), with an early-bird offer of around RM84,000 for the first 1,000 buyers.

Meanwhile, the BJ30 Hybrid is a rugged, boxy SUV measuring 4,730 mm long, 1,910 mm wide, and 1,790 mm tall, riding on a 2,820 mm wheelbase with 215 mm of ground clearance.

Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine churning out 158 PS and 235 Nm, mated to a 2-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). The FWD variant produces a total output of 334 PS and 550 Nm, while the 4WD version adds a rear electric motor to boost total figures to 409 PS and 685 Nm.

In Indonesia, it retails between IDR 529 million and IDR 589 million (approx. RM121,000 to RM134,000).

The estimated price gap between the two models sits around the RM30,000 to RM45,000 mark.

Arcfox T1

An output of 95 PS in a compact SUV is clearly tuned for urban commuting rather than spirited driving.

Its 310 km WLTP range realistically translates to around 250 km to 270 km in real-world conditions. For daily commutes of 30 to 40 km backed by a home AC wallbox charger, plugging in once a week is more than enough.

Its real appeal lies not in outright performance, but in low running costs: no engine servicing, no engine oil or filter changes, minimal annual road tax, and electricity costs that undercut petrol significantly.

Equipped with a 42.3 kWh LFP battery, a 30% to 80% DC fast charge takes around 25 minutes, while an AC full charge from 0% to 100% requires roughly 8 hours. While these charging speeds are unremarkable by 2026 standards, they are perfectly adequate for a city runabout primarily charged at home overnight.

BJ30 Hybrid

The BJ30 Hybrid's main selling point is versatility. The 334 PS FWD variant easily out-punches most rivals in its price bracket, while the 409 PS 4WD variant, with 685 Nm of torque and 215 mm ground clearance, is well-equipped for off-tarmac adventures.

Fuel tank capacity is rated at 60 litres for the FWD and 51 litres for the 4WD, returning an estimated total cruising range of around 1,000 km. It also boasts a 1,500 kg towing capacity, supported by front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent suspension setup.

This SUV requires no plug-in charging—just refuel at the petrol station and go. From weekday office commutes to weekend camping trips towing gear over rough trails, it handles it all.

The trade-off, of course, is higher fuel consumption than a pure EV and regular internal combustion servicing, as both the petrol engine and hybrid electrical components require routine maintenance.

For Different Buyers

If you walk into the showroom thinking, "I just want a hassle-free daily commuter, I can charge at home, and I want running costs kept to the absolute minimum," the Arcfox T1 makes sense. It is a purpose-built tool designed to slash transportation costs.

On the other hand, if you walk in thinking, "This will be my only car; it must carry passengers, haul cargo, take the family on road trips, and not tie me down to charging bays," the BJ30 Hybrid is the obvious choice. It is a multi-role SUV built for all scenarios, and the additional RM30,000 to RM45,000 premium directly buys that all-round capability.

Both models are currently awaiting their official local launch, where pricing, equipment lists, and warranty packages will be revealed.

If you are looking to purchase a new car within the next six months, the T1 is likely to arrive first by year-end. However, if you can hold out until 2027, the BJ30 Hybrid's spacious cabin and potent hybrid powertrain make it well worth the wait.
